866099 2010-03-11 07:50:00 I have an Asus N10J netbook which I want to install Windows 7 on. I have been reading up on installing using a bootable USB drive. I want to use my sandisk 16GB USB pendrive.

All the guides I've looked at talk about making 'USB' the priority in the boot settings for the notebook. I don't see a 'USB' option but I do have 'removable device' ...is that USB then?

866100 2010-03-11 07:55:00 Is it plugged in while you're in the BIOS?? You're looking under the boot menu? It maybe removable drive. There is a program that'll let you do this, but it'll only work with a version of Windows 7 you downloaded from digitalriver or something Speedy Gonzales (78)
866101 2010-03-11 08:07:00 I just looked and now it shows as a hard drive. It doesn't work. I've just found a program that is called Windows 7 USB DVD Download tool but it asks me for an .iso file. i only have a proper install DVD. How can I create a .iso out of the install DVD? supersi (8401)
866102 2010-03-11 08:13:00 Thats the program I was talking about. You cant use it. It only works from a site people downloaded the Win 7 ISO from. They had to pay for it before they downloaded it Speedy Gonzales (78)
866103 2010-03-11 08:18:00 I just remembered MagicISO..what about if I used this program to create an ISO file and then use the Windows 7 USB utility to create a bootable USB stick? supersi (8401)

"Create an image from disc"

There are also plenty of alternatives out there that can do it directly from the DVD, but since you've got the M$ version you might as well use it..

EDIT: Yes, you could also use MagicISO, but if its a trial it won't be able to do anything larger than 400MB(W7 is about 2.5GB)

866106 2010-03-11 08:21:00 Tried MagidISO, Windows 7 USB utility didn't kie it. Said it 'wasn't valid iso file'. Are there a couple of settings I need to check in magicISO? supersi (8401)
866107 2010-03-11 08:26:00 Like I said it WONT work. As it says here (store.microsoft.com)

Before you run the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, make sure you have already purchased the Windows 7 ISO download from Microsoft Store and have downloaded the Windows 7 ISO file to your hard drive. If you have purchased Windows 7 but have not yet downloaded the ISO file, you can download the file from your Microsoft Store Account.
