776234 2009-05-23 20:29:00 Saturday's NZ Herald came with a 'scratch 4 cash' card whereby sending an SMS message entitled you to claim a prize if you uncovered three symbols of a kind.
I find the small print on the back of the card very difficult to read but it seems once you have signed in then the company sucks $10 a WEEK out of you phone account. What you get for it I am not sure.
Unlike one similar scam I got caught with (IQ test) this one does tell you how to get out of it, most likely after you have lost a few dollars, and if you can read the small print.

I uncovered three hearts when I scratched. What I wonder is how many others also uncovered three symbols.

Looks pretty close to a semi legal scam to me.

These media companies also don't care or research what their advertisers actually do. As long as they make money from it, they are happy.

776236 2009-05-24 04:49:00 We got one too, and it also had 3 hearts after being scratched. davidmmac (4619)
776237 2009-05-24 07:05:00 Same here . Three hearts in the top row . I would like to know if anyone didn't get a match . Yes, it looks very much like $10 per week after txting .

The text on the leaflet reads:

"Match 3 symbols and you are guaranteed to win a listed prize" . The listed prizes on the leaflet are a laptop, an apple iphone, an 52 inch TV a nintendo and a ps3 . Somehow (being a sinic), I take it that I wouldn't be able send a txt to claim the prize and then stop the subscription .

Also, the leaflet reads:

"This promotion is not associated with this publication" .

The fact that it was in the NZ Herald rather than my spam box gives it credibility . So, if it does turn out to be a scam, I will very much associate it with the publication in a negative way . We will see .

776238 2009-05-24 07:24:00 Someone needs to send a text and if they don't get one of those prizes, take it up with the commerce commission. pine-o-cleen (2955)
776239 2009-05-26 08:27:00 A friend's son eagerly sent off his txt. The $10 went on his phone bill instantly. Getting hold of anyone at the scammers (well, probable scammers) is proving a bit harder. R2x1 (4628)
776240 2009-05-26 14:03:00 Just shows that the NZ Herald has no standard for their advertisers. I won't buy a paper from them again. robbyp (2751)
