2009-05-21 09:56:00 | Sorry to change the subject, but has anyone had any experience with AutoMax? Recently won a voucher with two free WOFs....I'm thinking whether I should sell or get my dad to use em. He usually does his WOFs at VTNZ Nothing is free, I remember when pitstop gave out free brake fluid flush.Took car in and and found a so called leaking seal, Refused to the flush until work was done.

2009-05-21 10:10:00 | The problem with old cars in changing the brake fluid by bleeding it out is some numbnuts push the pedal all the way to the floor. This pushes the master cylinder piston to travel to end of the cylinder where it hasn't been before. There is commonly a ridge and corroded metal at that end and the seal will start to leak. Best way to change the brake fluid is suck it out with venturi brake reservoir sucker fill up reservoir and push the pedal only a bit to bleed it. If your wife is pumping pedal and she isn't capable of following instructions stick a piece of 4 x 2 under the brake pedal to limit its travel.

2009-05-21 13:51:00 | And anyone with half a brain can figure out if work that the mechanic says is needed actually is, like brake pads...does my car brake smoothly and well? yes it does, do i need brake pads? no! When pads are worn to a minimum thickness, the braking efficiency is compromised because the mass of the pad material is reduced, thus will heat up faster producing brake-fade much more rapidly, plus because more heat is produced it will transfer through the caliper pistons and boil your brake fluid if you haven't changed it in the last couple of years (it is hygroscopic=absorbs water) and may cause total brake failure. As you can see, your average mechanic is trying to keep you and other road users alive (I'm one of those road users, and honestly it scares me to know that some people are quite prepared to drive unsafe and unwarranted vehicles at high speed, just to save a few dollars (some of the things I see would make you weep)) and has no interest in ripping anybody off, and is trying to do his job to the best of his ability (for not much recompense) and applying the letter and spirit of the Transport Agency regulations as he is required by law to do. All the places I've worked in the last 32 years have bent over backwards to give their customers excellent, honest and timely service. (Rant over)

2009-05-21 22:22:00 | I always take our cars to VTNZ and I'm quite happy with them here in our town - they've never been unreasonable, all the faults shown were really problems, etc. On the other hand, the one time I took it to a garage for a WOF, it failed, and I received an enormous list of things that we're wrong. Took the car to VTNZ and it passed. Mechie thought he could milk me? sarel

2009-05-22 21:15:00 | They failed it saying the high level brake light was not working. It was and is and always has - albeit a bit dim mind. Aye! So there's one dim light, and still the two side brake lights working. Meanwhile cars without the high central light (ie old cars) are passed without one. This is over the top and totally unreasonable. You should feel peeved! But I don't hold much hope of satisfaction.

2009-05-23 06:58:00 | with ya on that Personally I havent had a warrant or reg for months, i know my cars safe because my mechanic has looked over everything ive done to it and the only thing that stops me gettin cert is the fact the wheels are a different size . . . wider . . . not exactly a threat to the public or myself I guess you won't have insurance either then as without those others insurance is void even if you pay for it . Hope you don't hit some poor innocent while out driving then :(

2009-05-23 07:10:00 | i'm not a fan of VTNZ. family members like them because they get their dodgy cars past. also had a mate who bought a camper with new VTNZ WOF, local guys checked it over a few weeks later as he was preparing for a trip. they failed it, it wasn't safe to be driven! some fairly major faults. another person had a truck with new VTNZ COF and it turned out to have a cracked chassis. going by the rust in the cracks it had been cracked for a long time. VTNZ = Dodgy ! i much prefer some of the local mechanics. they have experience on what goes wrong. even better are the ones that attend road crashes, they get to see what breaks in accidents.

Makes you wonder doesn't it? It varies but only Queensland has no yearly inspection, and you are still required to keep your car road worthy, they have numerous mobile inspection units that are pulling over cars and inspecting them every single day of the year. |
