778267 2009-06-07 12:54:00 Ground heat pumps seem to be mentioned regularly on a certain British program, but I've never seen them mentioned here in NZ.
They are meant to be more efficient than 'air' ones because sub-surface temperatures are apparently warmer than the air temperature!

778268 2009-06-08 00:58:00 is that those under ground heat pipes they dig into the ground?

if so i imagine the extra cost for that would be overkill for a lot of people, especially if they don't have a big enough section to accommodate it.
better to have a fireplace, they don't require power to work.
the underflor heatpipes from the fireplace is a neat idea.

778269 2009-06-08 01:12:00 I agree with Tweak, no need to reinvent the wheel nothing wrong with a fireplace in a place like New Zealand.
With conditions for pollution prone places like CH CH no coal or open fire places but no conditions needed for places like Wellington. Smoke wouldnt get a chance to go vertical would it before being blown out to sea.
Anything that uses electricity generated by burning material from dead plants and dinosaurs for heating sucks big time.
I would like to know energy efficient a heat pump is ie how many BTUs you put in to how many you get out.
We get told leaving your phone charger plugged in and on requires a 10,000 amp cable direct to your house from the power station. Well you know what I mean.

If you go three feet down the temp is almost a constant 10C. That might not be so when in pcteck's part of the world. So basically you always have heating in winter and cooling in summer

Yeah but a bit of you know what in front of an open fire is better than in front of a heat pump vent.
