778349 2009-06-01 09:31:00 ALL firewood is free at some stage, but getting it ready to go into your fireplace usually adds a bit to the equation. Especially the senior wood that has been stored underground for a while. R2x1 (4628)
778350 2009-06-01 09:33:00 Firewood is free
Unless it is growing outside your back door and you use a hand saw it isn't.

Don't forget the fuel (food for the human), medical expenses from injuring your back chopping wood, etc. etc.

You really shouldn't burn treated wood.

You shouldn't be burning that stuff - it releases toxic fumes from all the chemicals used to treat the timber. While it isn't noticeable to you directly, your neighbours, kids playing outside, etc. will be breathing it the fumes.

As well as the pollution treated timber causes it is not good for your flue.
It reminds me of the guy who scored a bag of coal that fell off the back of a truck. It was smelting coal so became very expensive when he had to replace the grate.

778356 2009-06-01 19:48:00 Neither should you burn MDF it may burn extremely hot but the fumes are not good and it melts your firebox gary67 (56)
778357 2009-06-01 22:35:00 Mmm MDF. Makes a great fire for lacing sausages with chemicals.

I went on a tour of the MDF plant in Richmond, very interesting and equally eye-opening about how much great cell-killing stuff goes into MDF.

Blue baling twine also burns really well, not unlike tyres. We had several grain sacks full we threw onto a bonfire one time, had a massive pool of molten plastic at the bottom of the fire, and enough black smoke to make the fire warden ring up.
