778236 2009-06-01 03:12:00 We are considering a heat pump and have been surprised by the salesmen who say you should keep the pump operating all the time to save having to heat up the otherwise cold air.

This is nonsense of course and is the same as keeping a fan heater on all the time.
Apparently it is a fairly well known myth and probably accounts for the reason some people find that the heat pump is expensive to run.

This was actually the correct way to run the older heat pumps that lacked inverter technology; the theory was that shutting them off turned the compressor off. When turning them back on the compressor required quite a bit of power to get going again, so it was indeed more efficient to keep them on all the time. Certainly not the case now though, as I think all/most modern units have inverter technology, which rectifies the current from AC to DC, and gives the ability to soft-start, drawing less power.

778237 2009-06-01 05:18:00 Wow, Trev, do you run around the house in the nude ?? :D :illogical
We tried setting ours to 19 degrees and that is to hot - now have it at 18 degrees

I would imagine you are of the younger generation, but as you get older and require certain medications to keep you healthy that thin your blood you require higher temperatures to keep you warm in the winter.

Nope. The inverter regulates the speed of the compressor according to the temperature required. So in actual fact your heat pump maintains a constant temperature by adjusting the speed of the compressor, otherwise the room would just get hotter and hotter. You could leave it on constantly if you wish. Inverter technology in this case has nothing to do with AC/DC power.

778239 2009-06-01 06:20:00 Well nofam , you might be more correct than I thought. Just looked up Wikipedia and it seems that the current is rectified as part of the speed controlling mechanism, so I guess we can call it part of life's learning curve.
Cheers,

Hi Trev
I will be 65 years old in July, which can be roughly testified by Chill, Peter Coleman, Blam, Laura, Jamuz, R2X1, Jen & Johcar.

Am on blood thinners. And lots of other medications too !! However living in tropical Auckland might be a plus. We Jaffas are not all loonies running around in SUV's and spending up large !
Misty :D

He he I don't mind admitting you actually had me doubting myself there for a minute Richard; had to do a little digging to be sure!! :D

You're right Trev, he is just a kid ;)

778244 2009-06-03 09:04:00 I used to live in a flat with a high ceiling & poor insulation & the heatpump there cost an arm & a leg to run. The heatpump in my current flat is a lot cheaper.

My friend is in the process of fully insulating his house & he just put a heapump in. He told me it costs next to nothing to keep the house at 20 degrees.

778245 2009-06-03 18:56:00 I just got a quote for a Fugitsu unit - $2500 including installation. This for a two room sleepout. The price seems excessive. Perhaps they have to pay for the TV advertising?

I guess I need to get another quote or negotiate with them.
