A Google search shows identical systems elsewhere. How much engineering do you really think was done here? Unless any of the principals have any previous involvement with the old MELCO, the old Mitsubishi importers, the company name smells like trading on association.

Probably zero - they have probably just sourced these systems from a factory in China, and slapped a sticker or two on the box. There was someone selling these on Trademe back in 2006 with the same packaging (minus the Melco logo in the left hand corner).

778375 2009-06-02 07:09:00 Ink really is a ripoff. I just don't print.

A while ago, I brought about 500ml of screenprinting ink from a place here in Chch.

For $12.

While I realize that it is a different type of ink, I think that the point is still valid. You don't pay $40 for a bic pen. Ink is ink (to an extent), isn't it?

778376 2009-06-02 08:05:00 In terms of cost.

Laser are best for work stuff - b/w or color, I just do b/w cos I don't need color.
Inkjets for pix, I only print A4 and A3 when its cheaper to DIY. Smaller I just outsource.

778377 2009-06-02 22:09:00 Yeah, mono laser printers are definitley the way to go for home use, but colour lasers are slowly becoming more affordable now, Ink prices are ludicris.

Just checked today, it costs over $7 more than the cost of the printer to fill a Canon MP190 up with the same genuine ink cartridges it came with. :(

778378 2009-06-02 22:35:00 theres been smaller unit on the telly ads recently - ink tanks sperate to the printer and you somehow just plumb them into the ink cartridges and just fill the tanks

while this does sound good i wont be getting one as the cat will see it and eat it and i dont want a neon multi color cat anytime soon :waughh:

778381 2009-07-09 08:41:00 I bought one of these for a Canon Pixma ip4000 at work that we use to print CDs. The kits are kind of mickey mouse, they use bits of plastic and double-sided tape to hold everything in place.

I wasn't able to close the lid, and it won't work with the lid up. I asked about this and was told that the lid wasn't supposed to close, and that I should jam a bit of screwed up paper into the hole where the microswitch is so the printer would work...

The ink quality was crap too, very pale and washed out looking, but they said they would sell me some specialist ink (at twice the price).
I kept asking for a refund but they just kept fobbing me off with dumb excuses. If I'd bought it for myself I'd try the Disputes Tribunal but as it's a business purchase I guess we're stuck with it.
