777890 2009-05-29 07:17:00 I did it differently.

I split it into two triangles.
The lower triangle can be calculated easily. And you can use SOHCAHTOA to find the missing angles and side.

Then using Herons Formula (en.wikipedia.org) to find the area of the top triangle.

777891 2009-05-29 07:24:00 Bah. I got A+ at my Uni applied maths classes and would've loved to have given the answer!

Too bad... good on ya all for giving Jen the answer she needed.

Exactly how I solved it.

Currently one of the math wizzes at my school:D

777893 2009-05-29 09:53:00 x2 for bob_doe_nz's method, having recently gotten NCEA Level 1. :D

Can't be bothered solving it though :p

777894 2009-05-29 10:47:00 Another method that doesn't use much maths is to draw the shape to scale on graph paper and count up the number of squares/part squares. The result is pretty close to the mathematical answer and I've used it for calculating land areas.

Meh - I say bring on competition in the education system. If it encourages kids to excel, rather than just pass, then that's a good thing. This politically correct 'no child should fail' nonsense will destroy the country's future.

As a country we already do plenty of skiting - schools brag all the time about having the best rugby team, the best NCEA results, etc.
