Yeah, the name 'bing' does pose some linguistic difficulties. Perhaps it can be related to 'sing', 'sang', sung', giving us 'bing', 'bang', 'bung'.

Strictly, this would require persuading Microsoft to change the name to the noun 'bong'.

Hey, time for my medication...

780193 2009-06-11 21:07:00 Yes Sue and Somebody - but Bing seems to have a feature where you can go to Advanced Search and choose a country to search from ?

This is great for me as I can check how my website is being indexed etc.

780194 2009-06-11 21:56:00 Ahem!

Search king zings Bing: A combination of pre-launch buzz ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/sfsssfldn_dbjybgjhqhq_zrmmfvfn . html" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com), curiosity ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/rqzzzkwrr_dbjybgjhqhq_hgkkysyt . html" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com) and some eye-catching TV commercials ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/xdwwwfczc_dbjybgjhqhq_ohttpnpb . html" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com) brought a bit of a boost to Bing in its first week as Microsoft's search offering . According to comScore, the Redmond behemoth's share of search result pages in the U . S . gained a full two points, climbing to 11 . 1 percent during the debut days . Not particularly surprising, and certainly not enough to rattle the folks at Google .

In an interview with Fox Business ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/sfsssfldb_dbjybgjhqhq_sflldndj . html" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com), Eric Schmidt, the search sovereign's CEO, assumed an air of casual indifference to the latest assault . "It's not the first entry for Microsoft," he said . "They do this about once a year . Well, maybe every two years . "

" . . . . . in 2005, Microsoft pushed MSN in a big way . Fairly soon after, things morphed into Live Search with a more limited push . We're two or three years past, and it's a major new brand that Microsoft is putting out there . "

" . . . . . Somehow, it still feels a bit different than what they've done before . I guess it's a sense to me that this is the dice being thrown down the table for the final time . . . . I don't think Bing's arrival has changed what we're doing . We are about search; we're about making things enormously successful by virtue of innovation . "

And it takes more than flashy marketing to retain customer loyalty, he said: "You earn that . You don't just buy it with ads . You earn it, and you earn it customer by customer, search by search, answer by answer . "

Of course, as Search Engine Land's Danny Sullivan notes, Schmidt can't afford to be overly disparaging — when the antitrust hounds come sniffing, Google needs to talk about how strong the competition is .
