Nothing to do with quals, neither is the MS one, although you can choose to link your MC qual status on the MS one.

779129 2009-06-03 06:02:00 You don't 'justify' paying tax, Sam . It's a legal requirement that you pay tax on income earned .

I know what you're saying, but the IRD will come down very hard on anyone who doesn't declare income (if they catch them), however little that income might be, and once you're in their sights, they will dig and dig, to see what else they can find - I imagine it's not a pleasant experience .

I realise that, and I never said that I didnt agree with paying taxes .

But before you have a regular income and say for instance you do a job for $50 cash, are you going to register and pay your tax or pocket the cash? A lot of businesses start like this, up to you whether or not you agree but from what I've heard and seen starting a business can often be experimental .

First you test the waters and if it takes off then you can set your self up properly .

I'm not saying don't pay tax cos I know its necessary for the country to run etc etc but I guess spendin time in an industry where "cash" jobs are a perk, I'm not exactly strict about the whole tax thing :groan:

779130 2009-06-03 06:19:00 Its easy, If your going to ignore the laws of the land, for whatever reasoning, Don't broadcast it in public, hell not even in private. Play your cards close. Metla (12)
779131 2009-06-03 06:24:00 Come and get then IRD

I paid tax on about 9560 hours of the 9600ish I did last year, if the IRD wants whatever I havent paid they're more than welcome to it but they'd have to put the work in cos ive got no proof that I ever worked it and wouldnt even be able to tell them how much it was.

I pay tax now all the time like a good boy, its a lot easier once you have an income

See, no idea at all .

You don't pay tax on the $50 . Because thats gross profit .
You bank it, and then at the end of the financial year you add up all your $50's, then deduct off all the expenses - parts, travel % you can claim on the car, % you can claim on your house expenses, ads, etc etc . Whats left is either the NET profit, or NET loss .

Then you fill out your IR3 and send it in .

779133 2009-06-03 09:07:00 Yes I have no idea...

This guy hasn't started anything and is yet to make any money. All im arguing is that I don't think attacking him for not paying tax on his first few jobs is needed.

He just wanted hints in the right direction about making money off computers, not a lecture about NZ tax laws. He says he wants to initially work under the table, where he draws the line I don't know but if he's anything like me he will pay tax as soon as he starts making money.

My first paid website was making a few small changes for a family friend. It was a simple 2 minute job. I cant remember what I charged but it basically covered petrol costs to go see the guy and sort out what he wanted. I thought it was fair I didnt pay tax on that.

As soon as I started living off the money I started paying tax. My other job which i've still got gives me the hours I want and I've always paid tax on that as I considered it my income until recently
