868958 2010-03-21 23:51:00 I've got a WD hdd out of a system here. It's pretty damn useless. It doesnt like being a master (it says so on the post screen, if I connect it) as master. It doesnt even format (a clean install). But it can be formatted, if you connect it to a working system. Only thing is, it changes to a dynamic hdd. Whether you like it or not lol Speedy Gonzales (78)
868959 2010-03-21 23:52:00 That study Google did on hard drives said there was one specific manufacturer that had more failures than anyone else (although they didn't say who) Agent_24 (57)

Have you tried a full re-zero of all sectors? (not just format in windows)

868961 2010-03-22 00:37:00 Id never touch another seagate as long as I live, Ive RMA'd 8 so far. everything from 80gb to 1TB drives lasting from 2 months through to 4 years.

Never had a problem with any of my WD drives (currently running 4x1TB in hardware raid) and 1x400gb as my OS. (touch wood)

868962 2010-03-22 02:33:00 Go WD! :D

Anyways if you're wanting backups, after a Seagate HDD just died in my wifes laptop, we replaced it with a WD. Long story short it cost us just over $1K for the whole ordeal of having her HDD fail and then professionally recovered. It was out of the league of a "home repair".

We're now using Mozy.com for our offsite backups. USD$5 a month and it's well worth every cent of it, not to mention we can access and restore those photos from anywhere in the world if we need to. Really good software and a breeze to setup and use :)

868964 2010-03-22 04:05:00 Yeah, or HDAT2, or Western Digital's own program.

I'm sure there are many more as well

868967 2010-03-22 06:12:00 I have just spent most of this last week on photography workshops. The tutor was discussing gear and said that in his view Seagate HDDs were suspect, particularly Seagate Freeagent external drives. He thought Western Digital were much more reliable - particularly WD Mybook.

As most of my drives are Seagate.... I feel a little nervous, but suspect his information isn't quite up to date. Who is right? Should I rush out a buy four new HDDs right away? :(

As always - TIA!

the quality of drive or brand should not matter.
that's because you should be backing up.

as for seagate, I have loved them for years, but the freeagents do get very hot, which cant be good.
