780235 2009-06-07 07:36:00 I am wondering if it is possible to take out a wardrobe? it is a addition to the room at some stage im thinking, as it juts out, and does not have skocher? sp? board around it.............. currently it is not used, just in the way.

Skirting board?

Demo is always the fun part, its the clean up after that is boring.

Scotia (pronounced the way beetle spelt it) is the moulding used to hide the joint between the wall and ceiling.

Architrave or skirting boards are the ones down by the floor.

Beetle didn't say if it was at the floor or ceiling. Lots of houses don't have scotia boards, but most do have skirting boards (between the wall and floor).

780239 2009-06-07 09:49:00 floor scocher............ and around the outside top,
but 2 broken hammers and a screwdriver later, a hell of a mess and some sore fingers............. and about 95% of the thing gone....... i think its not so bad a job........... i have to get one more peice of frame off the wall, and ceiling, and im done.............

interesteing to find that the carpet is over top of lino in the wardrobe....
and i have managed to make one hole in the ceiling, which i thought was jib, but seems to have fibres in it.............. and the wall of the bedroom does not seem to have insulation in it......

the dust and mess........... is everywhere, and my exuberant helper soon gave up when the hard hitting was happening....... smaller hammer and ssmaller muscles............. and dust got the better of her...... i persuvered till my tv prog came on....

i think i did not to bad...... and the wheelie bin is handy and in the bedroom:p

but i will come back tomorow..... and do some more......

780240 2009-06-07 11:26:00 and i have managed to make one hole in the ceiling, which i thought was jib, but seems to have fibres in it . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
:) beetle:D

That will be fibrous plaster, and dates the house to the 1950's or earlier . While gib board was around then, it was fairly rough-surfaced and not suited to paint finish . The principal choices for ceilings were battened hardboard, battened pinex or fibrous plaster, in ascending order of cost .

My house was built in 1958 and has fibrous ceilings and old-type gib on the original walls . I resurfaced the latter to paint finish (to satisfy Mrs T) which was a major exercise, but re-gibbing was not an option for cost reasons .

There were a couple of large (fist sized) holes in the fibrous plaster ceiling but they were easy to patch and refinish, you just cut the hole out a bit larger and square it off, angle a larger square of stiff cardboard up the the hole and glue it in place using a string through a hole in the middle to pull it down flat .

Next, depending on hole size, you either glue a square of plasterboard in the hole and fill the gaps around the edges with filler, or fill the whole area with polyfilla and sand it flat . the repairs are completely invisible once painted .

Cheers

780242 2009-06-08 08:47:00 Problem is, Metla's digger is a bit hard on carpets ;) R2x1 (4628)
780243 2009-06-08 21:23:00 Beetle is always very forgiving and besides Met is an expert and only very little carpet will be damaged.! Cicero (40)
