Cold is relative to the climate in which you reside.

South Island can have 0 overnight and 30 at lunch time, whereas the North will have 10 overnight and 20 at lunch.

Inland on the South Island will have frost for months on end then snow on the ground for a week or two, normally nice sunny days though. North Islanders have stormy, rainy, dull days that gets them down and turns them into wingers.

Unsurprising really - day after day of grey skies, rain, low temperatures (relatively-speaking) and windy weather is enough to try the patience of a saint! All to do with serotonin levels.

Similar scenario in Chch when the nor'wester blows day after day, but then it's a bit more of a serious outcome than producing a few North Island whingers: tempers fray and domestic violence levels go up...

Personally (being a biker from way back - non-motorised now though), I prefer cold to wet. Easy enough to get warm so long as you're dry (that's what engine blocks are for when waiting at the lights).

Once you're wet (and cold) it's a very small step to misery...

Ken

I'll say, the winters we used to have in Brum were quite viscious at times, and they were nowhere near as bad as it could get further north, or even down in Kent.

(gets out violin) I remember the winter of 1941, I dug a tunnel from just beyond the back door to up the garden through about 5 feet of snow. The snow lasted about 3 months or so. We had no fancy heating then, a glass of water used to freeze solid in the bedroom at night, and it was sub zero continuously. Cicero up in Derby probably had the same fun.....

Same as winter of 1961/62, I built an igloo in the garden for the boy, it lasted from January to the end of March. Going to work by motorbike was an adventure.................

779719 2009-06-05 00:58:00 When I was a motorcycle courier in London ('83-'85) I had a Wall Street Journal paper route that took me from what is now Docklands, to Hounslow, starting at 6AM (the pay was terrible, but at least it was regular, predictable income!) .

Couple of winters, delivering papers at that time of day it was a case of riding in first gear with both feet down, with weight distribution even spread between bum and feet .

In fact, it was probably more dangerous climbing the icy front steps to make the delivery to the letterbox in the door, than riding on the ice!!!

One of the reasons I attached a sidecar to my Tiger 110 more than 55 years ago - I might occasionally slide on the ice but generally stayed upright . ;)

779721 2009-06-05 01:00:00 Yeah - had to buy a new car battery at $160 from Super Cheap. They told me that prices have gone up steadily, but so has the guarantees (3 years). I guess that's warm comfort.. kahawai chaser (3545)
779722 2009-06-05 01:00:00 We had a -9 deg frost the other day.

Wow! did you?
The lowest we've had has been -3, and that a couple of weeks ago. The lowest ever was -7, in 2007.

5 degrees most mornings lately, highs of at most 12.

Quite warm really.

779724 2009-06-05 01:12:00 2cm of ice on our birdbath this morning... great weather! Out of bed at 5.30am and outside for a roll around on the icy grass before breakfast.

Ken Yeah good fun, its not bad - blimey seen a LOT worse, used to ride to school on my bike years ago , hands turned blue almost with cold, couldn't even feel your fingers for at least 30 minutes later, skidding on the slippery roads - brakes were put your feet down and hoped they get a grip somehow

We have had a few crappy days, nothing really to worry about, but hey WAKE UP CALL its winter.

Toughen up - this weather is not cold - love the frosty mornings - the air always seems to feel and smell fresh for a change.
