| 868605 | 2010-03-20 03:05:00 | Hi there all. I have 2 500gb hdd's here that im wanting to install in to a external case and use as a backup unit. have both hdds as copys of my comtent. Whats the best way to do this. At the moment Im using a WD 320gb mypassport and using a program called Memeo Pro. It backs up any new files or changed files when I plug in the hdd. I brought the software when my boss brought his for work for are D-link-323 daul bay unit. Link: www.memeo.com Wanting to have a unit thats going to hold 2 hdds but maybe 3 or 4 hdds so I can upgrade later on. My budget is $700.00 for this. I like the look of the Lian Li EX-30Band the Lian-Li EX-50B but they are both out of stock. Also I dont have any esata ports on pc. Any help would be mint. |

| 868606 | 2010-03-20 03:27:00 | All you should need is an external enclosure, have a look through some on offer at Ascent (www.ascent.co.nz) - look through and some like this vantec (www.ascent.co.nz) holds two HDDS. Not a good idea to have all your backups in one place, so for the price of the units you could buy several, and still have change. Something else to look at - NAS devices, most come with drives, but some you can get without them, The problem is once you start going above 2 drive bays its climbing out of your price range. you can find them if you look around This here (www.einfo.co.nz NCLOSURE&products_id=17836) - 4 drive bays, JUST in your price range. | 868608 | 2010-03-20 04:35:00 | Either of those look OK. Never used them ( or even heard of them) :D But they should be fine. The reason I was suggesting not keeping every thing in One drive /Place, is if something fries, like the PC, and the drives attached that could go as well meaning every thing is lost. Having separate backups in different locations kind of makes it unlikely that in the event of a failure, or something bad happening, to lose both would be real back luck. For example I have nightly full PC backups to one server, and the data to another. Basically backed up in two locations - fully automated. |

Yeh was just thinking getting 2 of the Lian li EX-20B units and have 1 hooked up to pc for backup and then use the other as a backup that i hookup to pc like 1 time a week or month to do a full 2nd backup. And the procedure you mentioned should be fine.:thumbs: Others may say different, but at least you are doing backups, Sooner or later ALL computers fail -- and Murphy law dictates as soon as you talk about it, it happens :lol: I got a job Next week - the person, her PC is playing up, possible faulty board or HDD - Asked her if she had been backing up all her important work stuff ( like I suggested months ago) - she said shes been meaning to get around to it - I said do it NOW!!! as tomorrow maybe to late. |

| 868614 | 2010-03-21 02:28:00 | Thats basically HP, hyped up version of Windows Home Server, but in a fancy purpose designed Case. I have two WHS PC's / Servers, and thats what Does the full nightly backups of all PC's. One had the connector software going to it, so it does the back up, the other is just used as a storage server. The only limitations on Drives is the number of connections on the motherboard. The Servers them Selves are just standard cases with WHS as the OS, which was built from a highly stripped down Server 2003 with added extras. The connections are Via Ethernet -- A Review of it (www.zdnet.com.au) and A few more specs (www.homeserverland.com) |
