781323 2009-06-11 04:02:00 Has anyone here tried Fedora 11 yet? I'm interested to hear what people's thoughts on it are, particularly those using KDE-4.2.

Cheers,
Erayd

781324 2009-06-11 06:25:00 I'm going to install it in about two weeks. I have to finish a project I'm working on first and can't be distracted. :p

Have you heard of problems with KDE 4.2?

Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) in Fedora 11 (fedoraproject.org)

Q - There has been talk about creating a general panic screen now that its possible. Do you think we will ever have a blue screen of death on Fedora?
A - I don't think so. Personally, I like the idea of a Red Screen of Death better. On the serious side, I mentioned before about printing kernel error messages to the screen even under X, so things like that become possible, but how thats implemented remains to be decided.

781326 2009-06-11 07:09:00 I usually use gnome but decided to try out KDE on fedora 11 today...very clean and many desktop effects similar to compiz.

Nice to see the Install system with basic video driver option now, I had an unsupported card on an earlier machine.

I've been running KDE-4.2 for months - there are no real problems with it. 4.0 and 4.1 were an utter mess, but 4.2 is great :-D. Just avoid Amarok 2.0 at all costs - the UI is terrible. Stick with 1.4.

781328 2009-06-12 07:37:00 I tried the beta a while back. I couldn't get my nvidia drivers to install from the rpmfusion repo, and it kept complaining about some service failing to load each time I logged in, so I installed Kubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.3 over the top of it. I have heard pretty good things about it though and I'm sure it's improved a lot since then.

One thing that tripped me up trying to install it was that if you install from the live CD you can't do a full ext3 install and you can't boot from an ext4 partition. If you use the automatic methods it creates an ext3 /boot for you, but I was using manual partitioning and it took me a little while to figure that one out.

Both Kubuntu 9.10 and KDE-4.3 aren't released yet and still have a lot of work to go before they are (especially Kubuntu). If you're running either of these now, expect problems.

Yes I realise that. I still use Ubuntu 9.04 most of the time but have Kubuntu on another partition to try it out. And yes I've had plenty of problems already, but it is shaping up alright. :)
