870019 2010-03-26 10:18:00 I've rebuilt the boot file and the computer is up and running again but whatever caused the error in the first place is probably still affecting the computer and/or will strike again if not resolved. That can also indicate a simple corruption in the dll files.

IF you can rebuild the boot file, and it boots, click start /run type in eventvwr when open look at the system logs, see what errors are there - what do they say ??

Just some of the hal.dll errors (pcsupport.about.com) - not always to do with hardware.

Christ - I have seen that many times, and sometimes it's easy to fix, other times its a simple reinstall and alls well, then others theres a hardware problem.

Edited: stating the obvious :rolleyes: -- chkdsk runs on startup mainly due to corruption.

870020 2010-03-27 04:29:00 Hi again,

I could boot the drive again (after doing another rebuild) and took a look at the eventvwr.

These links are the results:
img29.imageshack.us
img709.imageshack.us
img707.imageshack.us
img215.imageshack.us

In the system log there's only 1 warning and 0 errors apparently.The warning doesn't seem significant to me. The log is full of 'information' as you can see, and they seem to be occurring constantly (note the timestamps). Doing a random sample almost all (or perhaps completely all, i forget..) were to do with the Pml Driver as shown in the image. Perhaps this is significant?

Thanks again!

870021 2010-03-27 06:33:00 "usually" if there are hardware problems, it would be full of various errors, -- if it were me, before condoning a HDD as failed, I would save all your data, emails, favorites and anything else you dont want to lose to an external source, wipe the drive and reinstall Windows, put your data back. THEN if it plays up it can be hardware.

Thats what all the big manufactures do if a PC/Laptop is under warranty unless its really obvious a failed component.

Damaged or corrupted operating systems can and do cause the same sort of errors as hardware failing. No need to spend money, on a new drive only to find out later it was OK - IF the drive is at fault after doing a reinstall, all you have lost is a bit of time.

Edited:IF you haven't already done so -- in the system logs, you need to scroll down to the time of the failures, that will tell if there or what are the errors.

re the pictures, Information like shown is good, thats standard reporting of windows, warning or errors is what you are looking for, Errors in particular.

870022 2010-03-27 07:36:00 I've had that hal.dll error. Just rebooted two or three times until the OS booted successfully.
Put it down to a "sticky" HD, or something.

It would occur at random, certainly not every boot.

870023 2010-03-27 23:16:00 Hi again,

When I went into the system logs I just unticked 'information' (since almost everything was 'information' and left alerts, errors etc ticked so they would show. The result was as shown in the pictures. I assume this covers what you were suggesting.

I've completed all the relevant scans suggested earlier in the thread - one of them (malware bytes) took a ridiculous 8 hours to complete... but it did appear to find some things.

The computer also appears to have a huge recycler folder even though recycle bin is empty which may have slowed things down. Am looking at how to clear this now.

Both Malware bytes and trojan remover needed a computer restart to complete their work, which I did BUT once again the hal.dll error came up, so I rebuilt again then started windows for them to complete their work. I'm going to post two logs: HJT log and Malware bytes log. MSE also found a couple of things and removed them. The Malware bytes log shows as 'no action taken' but actually everything was removed, just after the log was completed.

Any further advice on the basis of the logs etc is, again, greatly appreciated.

870025 2010-03-27 23:19:00 BTW, you will note that Norton is installed on the computer, however I completely disabled it and it serves no purpose and is not used. If however you think it may still affect things let me know and I'll uninstall it, otherwise it can just remain dormant.\

Thanks

870027 2010-03-27 23:52:00 Norton if installed, even if its been disabled actually is fully disabled, it can still cause problems.

To remove it completely ( or as good as) download the portable version of Revo Uninstaller (www.softpedia.com), that way it wont need installing.

Run it, select the norton product - click remove, when you have the option - select advanced, uninstall Norton - Once the Norton uninstall has finished DONT REBOOT as it wants, click next ( there will be two times), carry on and remove the reg keys, then any folders it finds, Now reboot to complete the uninsatll -- Nortons gone.

While you are at it, uninstall Askbar.

Then repost the log for Hijackthis -- Had a quick look, nothing really nasty obvious.

Looking at the malwarebytes log - these are a worry --

Files Infected:
C:\Documents and Settings\Morgan\Local Settings\Temp\Saf40D.tmp\install_flash_player.exe (Trojan.Downloader) -> No action taken.
C:\Documents and Settings\Morgan\Local Settings\Temp\Saf449.tmp\install_flash_player.exe (Trojan.Downloader) -> No action taken.
Saf75C.tmp\install_flash_player.exe (Trojan.Downloader) -> No action taken.
C:\Documents and Settings\Morgan\Local Settings\Temp\Saf65E.tmp\install_flash_player.exe (Trojan.Downloader) -> No action taken.
C:\Documents and Settings\Morgan\Local Settings\Temp\Saf762.tmp\install_flash_player.exe (Trojan.Downloader) -> No action taken.
C:\Documents and Settings\Morgan\My Documents\Random computer stuff\Random computer stuff\install_flash_player.exe (Trojan.Downloader) -> No action taken.

You may need to go in and manually dump them -- first open My computer, Tools/ Folder options / View Tab, change the hidden folders, to show Hidden files and folders. then navigate the path shown in the list from the log ---C:\Documents and Settings\Morgan\Local Settings\Temp\ Empty out the temp folder, or the ones listed as "no Action".

Also get Super antispyware & Spybot S&D from the links in my sig, install, update - do a FULL scan -- Will take a while.

Looking at the infections, and the lack of errors in the event log, I would be more inclined to think its a corrupted OS than a failing drive.

Once clean you can also do this -- click start/run, type in sfc /scannow (Note space after sfc / ) it may ask for your windows CD to replace any damaged files, so have it handy.

870028 2010-03-27 23:56:00 Or use ccleaner, it'll remove the temp files etc Speedy Gonzales (78)
