781333 2009-06-21 10:32:00 Well I installed the 64-bit version (full DVD) of Fedora 11 on my lappy yesterday. I've jumped F10 completely as my desktop still runs F9, complete with a busted KDE.

I was expecting problems because a) it is bleeding edge and b) there are more than a few unhappy campers on the Fedora forum complaining about F11.

I did the usual custom selection of packages (I prefer KDE) and custom partitioning with no problems.

My WiFi worked out of the box.

KDE looks nice, still not too fond of the Windows-like program menu. The appearance is very customisable and sooo easy to install new colour schemes and icons etc. The default KDE Fedora 11 desktop has come a long way from the butt-ugly excuse of a desktop *someone* thought looked OK.

There is no ATi driver available yet - no surprises there.

Adding the finishes touches to the install has been made very easy with autoten (www.dnmouse.org) application - just tick what you want and it does the hard work for you. :D

Still not a distro for newbies though IMHO.

KDE looks nice, still not too fond of the Windows-like program menu...I agree, it's horrible. Ditch it. Then use the lancelot launcher - it's a plasmoid one included with KDE-4.2, and in my opinion it's a hell of a lot better than the default one.

There is no ATi driver available yet - no surprises there. You should be able to grab the binary ones for your card, but you're right - they suck. Pity it's a laptop and you can't just swap out the video card...

They work, but they leave a hell of a mess. Unless this one does the sane thing and installs untracked files to /opt?

Unless this one does the sane thing and installs untracked files to /opt?This script was written by a moderator/community manager from the Fedora forum, so they know what they are doing. You could watch it running in a terminal console and it used yum to go fetch all the selected files and dependencies required from the standard and non-free repositories, and then install them. All files were marked for future updating by yum. Looks nice and tidy to me.

It certainly saves time doing each one manually.

781336 2009-06-22 04:50:00 You can also just right click on kickoff and change it back to the old style menu. ad_267 (6193)
