780837 2009-06-09 21:51:00 I've had both good and bad experiences with IRD.
Impossible to argue with if they are wrong.

However recently I had one ring about my student loan!!!! - 100 years ago that was.
I was all prepared to argue as I paid it straight away by adding to my mortgage at the time, checking what the total owed was with IRD at the time.

But no, she said there was a stuff-up way back then and they owed me $956.

780838 2009-06-09 22:05:00 They rekoned I owed 1700 dollars in child support even before I had a child. Started taking it out of my pay even though I said i wasnt a father at the time.
They eventually after docking 12 weeks of my pay refunded it with no interest, no apology nothing. Scumbags. This was about 6 years ago, they have been nothing but scum since and always will be.

That is correct. You as an individual cannot, but if you are self employed, your business can. But not you.

780841 2009-06-10 10:41:00 Hello tax experts!

Was talking to my Dad about my electronic security apprenticeship for work and he said I should be able to claim the tax back on all my costs (block course costs, open polytech papers etc etc).

How do I go about doing this?

Your father is showing his age. It is a long time since an ordinary Joe Blow could claim for those things.
