869918 2010-03-25 09:51:00 Hi Team

I pretty much have the new computer ready to take the load, but I want to shift the paging file from the C: drive to a separate paging partition on my data disk to speed things up a little.

The basic instructions are: Start> Control Panel> Performance & Maintenance> System> Advanced> Settings> Performance> Settings> Advanced>Virtual Memory> Change.

The process is straightforward, but the Performance & Maintenance tab doesn't appear in Control Panel.

I'm running under Adminstrator privileges, so where-oh-where has my Performance & Maintenance option gone? Is there a back-door entry I can use to bypass Control panel?

Cheers

869919 2010-03-25 10:03:00 Right Click My Computer on desktop/Properties/Advanced/Performance, Click Settings/Advanced Tab/Virtual Memory, Click Change, setup as you wish, this is for WinXP Pro zqwerty (97)
869920 2010-03-25 10:23:00 Found the answer, it doesn't appear in "Classic View" so I had to change the view, and that made the "Performance & Maintenance" tab appear and it was all plain sailing from there. I now have a substantial paging file on my data disk in a 6 GB partition all of its own. That should speed things up a little.

Why does MS do such stupid things in their OS's? That feature is not linked to the chosen view in any way so why hide it in classic view???

Now, where do I go to hide the ads? I think that was controlled from FF but I can't see where at present.

869921 2010-03-25 19:27:00 Are you actually improving performance by doing this? I can understand using a swapfile on a separate hard disk, but it doesn't seem to make sense if it's on a different partition on the same physical disk that's being accessed regularly. You are guaranteed to have more head movement on average by having it in a different partition, since the head has to move past the end of the data partition any time it wants to access swap storage (then back again to hit the data partition).

There's a bit of a discussion on this here (www.tomshardware.com).

If you're using Classic view it's just
Start > Control Panel > System

By not using Playskool Categories view, you just skip clicking on the Category name (in this case "Performance & Maintenance").

869923 2010-03-25 19:49:00 Yep, you need to put the paging file on another hdd.

To stop ads in Firefox get Stylish add-on and put on latest version of erayd's script.

That's exactly where it is, and I've put the partition near the start of the disk, for what that's worth.

What is "erayd's script" and where do I find it. On the old computer I just installed something simple, may even have been something in Firefox, it is so long ago I don't recall it. Also, where do I find the 'Stylish' add-on?

869925 2010-03-25 20:25:00 You find the stylish add-on I think under add-ons. Search for it / install it Speedy Gonzales (78)

I looked it up on google and it seems to be all about restyling the screen presentation, I saw nothing about ad-blocking, or was I looking in the wrong place???

PS. Speedy:: I'm still keeping the old girl alive on life support while I sort out minor bits and pieces. I'm surprised it is still going, but you sure did a good job, and it really did save my bacon!

One quick question: When copying old data files to a clean new disk, it seems logical that the data would be contiguous (as oppose to disk cloning or imaging, which I assume copies over a sector by sector snapshot of the old disk structure, fragmentation and all) so I assume that the copied data will not be fragmented?

Sorry, I didn't mean that it was 'hidden when in Classic View" I was complaining that it was only easily accessible if you used Classic View, I couldn't find it at all in Category View, though it may be there somewhere.

Too many options, not enough years to sort through them. Windows for Workgroups was never like this! :D
