870284 2010-03-27 04:08:00 Hi folks,

My mother's PC is an XP Home system. Whenever we cold-boot it, everything loads painfully slowly. In Task Manager's Performance Tab the culprit appears to be "svhost.exe - Generic Host Processor Win32 - DNS Client (DNS Cache)". This process uses 100% of CPU Useage for maybe 10 minutes, before it "snaps" into normal speed. At this point the CPU useage drops way down to near 0 and everything is sweet.

I've run both Process Lasso and Process Explorer and they confirm the above.

She uses Zonealarm as the firewall and permissions seem to be set correctly.

What might be causing this particular problem and could you suggest any solutions or fault-finding tips that would help me track it down?

Many thanks!!

870285 2010-03-27 05:18:00 Soon after I posted my question I found the solution on the web: disabling and stopping the DNS service in XP's Admin Tools/Services. Worked like a charm.

Thanks for looking :)
