783057 2009-06-17 23:03:00 Perhaps I'm being rather simplistic in my view that if they don't have the prerequisite qualifications to take a university course, then they should go back to school and get the necessary education. If they failed at school, why should they be any more skilled at learning at uni? Seems a formula for failure by throwing them into the deep end if they haven't passed the necessary prerequisites for the course. user (1404)
783058 2009-06-17 23:10:00 Indeed, no use setting them up for failure. Rob99 (151)
783059 2009-06-17 23:15:00 uni develops the skill learnt through completing secondary school.
if they dont have that skill set , how are they not going to be a burden on the uni system.

uni is a big step up from college , i found that out last year, im second year now.
i dont know how they will deal with it

783060 2009-06-17 23:21:00 If a person cannot get through high school without passing NCEA level 1 then chances are he/she won't last a month in uni.

Sharples is discriminating against his own people. I have Maori friends who are extremely intelligent and diligent in their work. Sharples is painting them with the same brush, unfortunately.

Besides, won't free access lead to abuse to the student allowance system?

Yep I agree, If your not intelligent enough to achieve the university entry requirements how on earth are you going to pass anything at university which is a much higher level of learning?

783063 2009-06-17 23:40:00 What is it with the Maori Party, think they run the bloody country! :annoyed: Why on earth should Maori have more privelages than anyone else?

John Key...

"If young Maori are not meeting the grade for NCEA, then we need to go back to resolving the issues in relation to literacy and numeracy".

"That's why the Government's supporting its programmes in that area, rather than just letting people into university holus bolus."

783064 2009-06-17 23:56:00 You can get into university under special admission (www.nzvcc.ac.nz) if you are over 20 yrs of age. You don't need to have matriculated. Deane F (8204)
