783096 2009-06-19 03:54:00 Why is it that Maori are the only race that cant make it in the "western" (as they call it) education system ?

Chinese, Indian, African people can all do well at school and their first language is not English, whereas Maori are bought up speaking English.

They have to stop feeling sorry for themselves and wanting every thing given to them for nothing.

Yep, there are quite a number of lazy ass bastards out there who moan that its all our fault that we took their land bla bla bla... but wait - if we didn't come in the first place - there would be no bloody university for them to bloody well attend in the first place.

783098 2009-06-19 06:12:00 This issue was similarly raised last year when the Ministry of Education mandates that Universities should practise elitism when it comes to graduate entry.

In my years studying at the University of Auckland, I have come across people studying just for the sake of getting a degree rather than pursuing what they really want to do in life. :(

I agree, I studied chemistry which I never did at school, and got a fright with the number of lab hours required - and preparing/writing the procedures (those that studied chemistry will surely know - stage 1 to 3) in addition to the lectures. Only studied because many of my friends studied. I remember there were a few Maori students studying advanced chemistry courses (1980 - 83)

For maori, or anyone, without relevant qualifications Uni, perhaps there should be targeted topical/subject courses to prep them, but then that's another cost to the system...

I think the fact they never made a wheel or burnt coal could have something to do with it.

783101 2009-06-19 09:17:00 Let me remind people, there is no need to make degrading comments about any ethnic group just because you don't agree with the topic.

Argue/discuss/debate the topic, but keep it above board please.

783102 2009-06-19 23:44:00 Diluting University Degree standards will create more problems than solving the deficiencies in Maori tertiary education, therefore, any access to University education must be on the proviso that candidates meet the minimum entry standards.

Completing a Bachelors Univeristy degree is more about application and good work habits than great levels of intellect, so long as the student has a sound secondary education and meets the minimum entry criteria.

I argued several years ago, when the Tainui under "Treaty of Waitangi Settlements" were granted the sites that Waikato University and Waikato Polytechnic occupied, that the income generated from these settlements should be solely in the form of scholarships for young Tainui, thus ensuring that an enduring benefit was generated for Waikato Maori.

This type of arrangement would still be possible, and would be a move away rom just another free hand out from the tax-payer.

783103 2009-06-20 01:17:00 Perhaps I'm being rather simplistic in my view that if they don't have the prerequisite qualifications to take a university course, then they should go back to school and get the necessary education. If they failed at school, why should they be any more skilled at learning at uni? Seems a formula for failure by throwing them into the deep end if they haven't passed the necessary prerequisites for the course.

+1...
