783065 2009-06-17 23:59:00 Think we may be better off ignoring what he said, and asking why he said it, what is he up to?

I believe Sharples is far to clever to believe this would work or that it would ever get off the ground, His agenda is.....?

783067 2009-06-18 00:01:00 You can get into university under special admission (www.nzvcc.ac.nz) if you are over 20 yrs of age. You don't need to have matriculated.

Aint that a hard case, My sister worked her arse off to get into UNI, all the while her friends partied hard.

Then when they hit 20 they went to UNI, Got qualified as chefs and crap and travelled the world. LMFAO.

783071 2009-06-18 02:34:00 Shock the Maoris and say yes to this policy, set them up to fail.
Employers would then treat all Maoris with any tertiary qualification like a mad Irishman with a grenade sans the pin.
Imagine Maoris professionals like doc or dentist working on you with a degree from university that was forced to let them enter.

"We have seen how the dice are loaded against Maori, right through the school system," Dr Sharples said.

"That is not any reflection on the academic potential of our young people.

Anyone seen the school system loaded against Maori in the last 30 years?

It was the complete opposite when I went to school, Even before the special treatment became strategy I came across more then a few completely racist teachers, and the systems themselves made special effort for Maori under achievement.

The problem isn't in the schools, Its at home, all the attention in the world means nothing if at home its dismissed as honky rubbish. I never saw anyone struggle at school due to them being Maori but I sure as hell knew which of the people in my class didn't have to go to school, weren't fed properly, Were brought up to have a chip on their shoulders, and were knocked back by their family if they achieved anything.

If they want to improve literacy among Maori kids then the parents and their immediate community need to support them in that goal, Special treatment without it just reinforces the failure.

Sharples is right in that the academic failure of young Maori is no indication of their potential, But he is wrong in blaming the systems that are working so hard to correct the issue, Sharples issue is these systems are in his eyes the product of a white and oppressive Government and therefore wrong, and any thing done that isn't controlled by Maori will be racist and wrong.

What he wants is money to build a race based schooling system.Run by Maori, attended by Maori.
