870505 2010-03-28 02:20:00 Hi Guys

I have just installed Windows 7 onto my desktop.
Still installing all of my regular software.

What are the things you do to your machine after you have installed Windows 7 ?

On XP I had a list of things, such as turning off the short cut icon arrow,
Turning off the thumbs.db creation.
Taming my system tray.
Setting my task bar to two lines (so I could see the date nicely)

What are some of yours ?

(I am hoping that the default for jpg files is not JPG (in caps)

870508 2010-03-28 02:36:00 A firewall, followed by antivirus.

Internet browser, Microsoft Office Suite (or OO)

Turn off unnecessary Windows features (e.g. uninstall Internet Explorer)

Configure default programs for various file extensions (e.g. HTML files to be opened by Firefox)

That's about it for now :p

The windows search is a great addition in W7, makes the old search look :yuck:

Personally I have not seen it slow down a PC, I have tried it on and off, no difference.

programs I add in are:

Firefox
Foxit Reader for pdf
Izarc (http://www.izarc.org/) - Zipping program, better than winzip.
Adobe Flash Player (gonna need it sooner or later)
Media Player / Home Cinema (http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/)
CD Burning program - Normally the free version of Ashampoo Burner
Ccleaner
Malwarebytes ( as long as people actually will use it is another matter)
Office of some form
A virtual XP in one form or another
Antivirus
Java
Go into msconfig and disable any programs that dont have to run on startup

870513 2010-03-28 03:29:00 It slows the system down and its crap. Its faster when its off (well it is here) Have to disagree there, I have done heaps of W7 installs, Didn't notice any difference in the ones I did disable, then turned back on again, tried disabling on several of mine when playing about and no difference, mind you they all were not to short of power (read as low spec crap like budget Dell's and Compaq's)

Personally that's the most used feature I use apart from browser, mail and office products - Esp when looking for something to open quick in the PC, or even more so when looking for something over the LAN -- Now where was that again.

Just did a quick search for a random music Group -- took all of 6 seconds to show results from 3 servers, My media center in the lounge and this PC - located 68 audio tracks, & 6 Videos. If its a new search it may take a little longer but only a few seconds.
