783009 2009-06-17 08:53:00 After endless hours of trying to connect my new lappie to the Internet I am finally online again.

Man oh man the hassels I've been through... having to deal with an hour more over the last 2 days just waiting for the helpdesk to answer the phone, dealing with this new notebook, dealing with this new Vista system, dealing with getting a phone line installed in this sleepout. I almost reverted to going back to dialup!! :groan:

I was almost about to try and find Jen's phone number to ask her because I just couldn't connect!

Then my brother gave me a USB cable for my modem and lo-and-behold the wizard mangaed to get me going

I'm not perfectly happy because I still can't work out why the setup disk (from Telstraclear) couldn't detect my ethernet port, which is why I'm using a USB connection between the modem and the lappie, but nevermind, at least I'm live again! *smiles*

Now I just have to get a decent browser installed instead of this lousy piece of IE ****

783010 2009-06-17 08:58:00 Frustrating isn't it. The man that invents a SIMPLE way to do anything computer related is the man that will make millions. pine-o-cleen (2955)
783011 2009-06-17 09:40:00 I still can't work out why the setup disk (from Telstraclear) couldn't detect my ethernet port theres the problem - those setup CD's are a pile of crap - MANY times I have seen some one try to use them, it fails - I walk in ,ask for the user details if ADSL or IP address if its cable, set the connection manually and away it goes. wainuitech (129)
783012 2009-06-17 10:04:00 I'm now extra happy because I'm now using Firefox. I think I'll stick with it instead of my previous Mozilla - this browser seems to have more compatibility.

Now all I have to do is import my bookmarks, and then my programmes then i'LL BE MORE HAPPY.

eXCEPT i STILL HAVE TO LEARN TO USE THIS SMALL KEYBOARD! lol

[edit] Ouch - as mentioned... gotta get used to this keyboard!

Fair comment. But when I set up the adsl on my late mum's XP system it worked without any probs. I think in this case it's down to Vista, perhaps.

783016 2009-06-17 10:35:00 So true, those setup discs that Telstraclear provide are absolute rubbish. Was at a customers house the other day setting up their Broadband, and nothing but hassels.

Coffee Cup coaters is all they are good for.

Get a PS/2 to USB converter cable and attach an old KB. Only a few bucks or you can have mine.

To be honest, never really had any problems with Vista and ADSL - thats because the settings are actually in the modem/Router - if the modems settings are correct, and vista is set to obtain the IP address automatically, it should auto pick up the connection.

A Few things I regularly come across - is customers either give incorrect passwords or user names, was at one place earlier this week - she swore blue murder the password was -------- finally ended up calling Xtra (20 minutes later :sleep ), while waiting the person found the original paper work - totally different password - and even though it worked she still insisted it was the one she had given me which didn't. :groan:

One thing I really find annoying - when calling most help desks to check / confirm setting I actually have to tell them what to check for Eg: correct spelling of user name /passwords.

Couple of times the customers have been told the ADSL is on - you ask the help desk person to actually check it is --- "OH sorry its not activated yet - give it 15 minutes and try again" --- should be called hindrance desks :D
