| 871870 | 2010-04-01 23:36:00 | A lady has just asked to look at her 1TB Maxtor drive. It is no longer visible in her My Computer and makes a beeping every couple of seconds. Plugged it into 2 of my computers, not detected as new hardware and also makes a soft beeping noise every couple of seconds, put your hand on the drive and you can feel it vibrate as it beeps. Still well within its warranty period. Any idea's anyone. Thanks |

| 871872 | 2010-04-02 01:18:00 | Doubt if the 'beep' is an actual beep, probably noise generated by the failing/failed HDD (head/s hitting the platter/s etc), dont think a external drive would have or need a audio device. Get her to return it asap. |

Get her to return it asap. I have already suggested she retrurn it under warranty, especially considering there is no power light either. Googled it, quite a few postings for *beeping* hard drives, long version short, they all seem to equal failed drives. Hopefully she will not have any issue's when she returns it. The sound itself is hard to describe, best way of describing it is as a very soft beep. You could be right as each *beep* coincides with a vibration, maybe as the platter spins or something. Thanks anyway. |

| 871874 | 2010-04-02 18:46:00 | If you took it out of the enclosure you'd probably find it isn't really a beep. It's stuffed though, so time for a new one. next time Seagate or Western Digital are better and have longer warranties, although drives, being mechanical do fail. |

| 871875 | 2010-04-02 22:34:00 | All sorted. Replaced with same size WD model. They tested the power cord right there, that checked out, plugged in the unit and declared it a failure, indicated they wouldn't try repairing it but would replace it, didn't know what they might have in stock but within a couple of minutes, returned with a 1TB WD hard drive. Couldn't have been easier. |

She got the drive from RossNorman in Christchurch and went there with her yesterday, they couldn't have been more helpful in this matter. Plus the new driver is slightly more expensive than the previous failed one and she has probably got a better brand in that she now has a WD unit. Cannot complain. |
