784189 2009-06-21 04:51:00 Hi, are there any phones that works as a Telecom landline as well as a VOIP direct with a wireless router? Ie . , the computer can be turned off .

The reason I ask is that it can be useful if I am overseas and I call back via VOIP and it can be answered when the computer if turned off .

Thanks .

784190 2009-06-21 07:17:00 You can get an ATA Adapter, something like the Grandstream Handytone HT-486:
www.trademe.co.nz

They work without a computer, you can plug in any regular telephone, and basically when you dial it'll try and dial out VoIP (Get an account with the likes of 2talk / VoIPStunt).

IF in the event that the internet is down, and you've plugged in your normal telephone line, when you make a call it'll fall back to the regular Telecom line.
You can also still receive regular calls to that phone from the Telecom line regardless of your internet being up, or not :)

None of this relies on a PC being on at any time.

Hope this helps

784191 2009-06-21 07:54:00 Thanks for that Chill

I am actually not looking at using a VOIP account because we don't use it often enof. They just use international phonecards.

I prefer not to but don't mind if I have to get a mobile Skype handset and leave that at home and have a standalone Telecom landline cordless unit.

784192 2009-06-21 12:28:00 Why not use VoIPStunt then? Means you dont have to mess with monthly fees (On the free one), nor do you have to have a PC on. Just hook up the cordless phone and set it so you need to dial a prefix to get SIP? Im sure thats possible ... Chilling_Silence (9)
784193 2009-06-21 13:56:00 I'd just switch to Worldxchange completely for phone.

$11.25/month for the line, free local calls, 5c/min national AND international calls, 30c/min cellphone, and you get a normal number. I've been with them for a year or so. If you go overseas you can even take the ATA box with you and have a "local phone line" overseas, which is what I did.

784195 2009-06-22 06:31:00 They do have cordless phones that does Skype too or ones that does MSN and normal phones :p

It is not my phone you see ... lol. It also means that all the phones in the house needs to be converted or replaced to work on Xnet VOIP etc... we have a good few of them.

Have you considered getting a multi-handset cordless phone system? That way the one purchase gives you as many phones as you need and just one box needs to plug into the WXC box.

On the other hand, if it's not right it's not right, and it actually sounds like that won't quite do what you want anyway (though it would save money on your phone bill).

So to clarify, you want something at home that you can call by VOIP for free/very cheap from overseas and have somebody here answer, not relying on a computer? By far the easiest option would be to use calling cards, but you probably do that already...

IF you switched the line to WxC at home, you could call home from overseas, pay for the first minute ($0.20 to $2.50 depending on where you are in the world) and ask them to call you back. This would only cost NZ $0.05 a minute to most places in the world.

784197 2009-06-22 08:49:00 I think that they are not used to cordless phones, they are used to a normal phone in the kitchen etc etc... and in each of the bedrooms.

I am looking for something at home that can receive a phonecall from like Skype if I am overseas and I call home with a Wifi cellphone for instance. Something that can work without a computer ie., direct with the router. I will also consider a Skype phone as well althou I understand Philips has a cordless phone that works with normal Telecom as well as Skype without a computer - and another model that works with the MSN system.

I had a trip to Malaysia and that got me thinking, cos my diary, some photocopied pages and my glasses etc, came to a weight of 1kg and because I travel light like a 5kg checked cargo bag that 1kg is quite precious. That if I get a Smartphone, that can do all that, can have GPS, can have Wifi as well and Skype etc.

When I was in Malaysia the going rate was $1.00 per min to call home or 50c a min to call local Malaysia (NZD equiv) which I thought was just a rip off. That was at a Internet Cafe. When I was in London it was like 10% of that.

But yeah the call back feature is a bit of a awkward take.

784198 2009-06-26 03:00:00 Question: Why Skype?

I cant stand the damn thing personally ;) Use of a SIP Phone / ATA Adapter and an account with 2talk.co.nz (Free account even) gives just as good rates, built on open-standards, more devices to choose from..

Basically, if you get an iPhone, it'll do all of the above, and more :D
