785010 2009-06-24 23:12:00 / Hour then pay the worker that $50, if you got paid $50 / hour, you can bet your boots the company will be charging out at least double that - other wise the company will go broke real quick.

There's running costs of the business,Transport costs, Rental of the property to pay for , power - the list goes on and on.

So why should I ?

Yes but not many people get an hourly WAGE of $50.00 an hour.

My local garage charges me about $45.00 an hour and they have to pay their mechanics (trained, qualified I hope) and pay their rent and power etc.

So why should I ? x2

785011 2009-06-24 23:14:00 I was going to do a RAM upgrade on my uncle's PC, but I live in a different city to him, so I gave the RAM stick to my cousin who was going to my uncle's house. It was a good plan until my cousin couldn't get to the RAM slots because the 3.5" bays were in the way. Not a good start. sammo450 (13626)

If you under value your skills, compared to what other people doing the same job are getting then thats your problem.

I know lots of techs that get paid what they are worth, their skilllevels and what part of IT work they are involved in.
Many places charge over $100 an hour. Some places, have a min charge out, $100 + even if they are there 5 minutes.

You cant compare the local garage to the skills of other professions. The garage I go to charges $65.00 + gst /hour, the owner said to me once my charges are very reasonable compared to some other computer places. (I do all his IT work).

Many times I dont charge by the hour, but by the job and what's needed.

Exactly.
Some time is never charged out,eg time spent trawling tech sites for a fix for
some obscure problem in some unsupported (or MS) software, possibly a issue that the software developer is aware of but wont admit to.
If a job on a home user PC goes way over time then the charge is usually cut back to a reasonable level, often so they wont just write it off & cancell the job.
Try that with an old oddball car that takes a huge amount of time to do what
would be normaly easy & see if the garage will charge what the repair would
cost on an average jap car instead of actuall time.

785014 2009-06-25 08:42:00 Well I am a carpenter/joiner by trade so have two sets of trade papers and I know what I am worth to my boss as worked for myself for 10 years before taking current job and my boss charges me out at 3 times what he pays me. I know that might sound a lot but SWMBO does accounts work so I know that in reality he needs to charge that amount to cover all of the companies bills etc gary67 (56)

That sounds like an HP trick - some are damn hard to get to the RAM Slots. wainuitech (129)
