785721 2009-06-26 12:00:00 Maccrazy, does that mean a cellular reception that is connected? I mean if I do not enable international roaming nor pick up a local country simcard, does the A-GPS work quicker or would it just work slower? Nomad (952)

785723 2009-06-26 13:28:00 Then I must try again sometime. I only tried one place that had no reception. It waited 1 minute then couldn't be bother waitng Ninjabear (2948)
785724 2009-06-26 14:33:00 But I thought the point of A-GPS is using cellphone towers to lock your position. Without it it can't? Ninjabear (2948)
785725 2009-06-27 05:03:00 The iPhone 3GS should support turn-by-turn directions, its out in about 3 weeks in NZ IIRC?

Read here for A-GPS:
en.wikipedia.org
The first line summarizes it ;)

But I thought the point of A-GPS is using cellphone towers to lock your position. Without it it can't?No, that is triangulation. With an A-GPS, cell towers are used to speed up the process of getting a satellite lock.

785727 2009-06-28 01:23:00 Ninja, I want to check with you. In an area with no cellphone reception the GPS is useless - it cannot tell where you are and it cannot tell you which direction to walk?

So in that instance in hardware what is the difference between a GPS specified handphone vs a handphone without GPS that you can download maps yourself?

I'm not sure if this is what you mean by here it goes.

I turned off reception on my mobile and waited for 4 mins and it still cant pinpoint my location

The 2nd question your asking. I think I know what you are trying to ask.

If a cellphone has GPS then it can pinpoint your exact location on the map while if your cellphone have trouble pinpointing your location then you can still look through all the street names . If you don't know where you are then obviously you won't know where to start looking.

then again you said the difference in hardware?A cellphone that has hardware has a GPS chip built inside? One without GPS means there isn't a GPS chip inside the cellphone.?

Not sure what you trying to ask

1. I meant that if you go to an area without any cellphone reception does GPS work at all. Can it tell you where you are and can it tell you where to walk to get there.

2. What is the difference between a specified GPS specified cellphone vs a cellphone that is not specified. As I understand you can get something like a Apple iTouch (no cellphone inside it) or a cellphone that has no GPS but you download Google Maps. Does this pinpoint your position with Wifi reception (or the non GPS cellphone via cellphone reception) and tell how you to walk to get there?

Yes, granted that one has a GPS chip and the other does not but in terms of practicality does both products get you to the same destination just as easily and quickly.

785729 2009-06-28 07:31:00 1.It does work. I tried it just now but I had to wait 10 minutes before it could find where I am and calculate the distance to the street I want to go to.

2. It uses Wifi to pinpoint your location but it isn't as fast as A-GPS. As you travel along it'll probably take a few minutes to update your location.Possibly even longer. Haven't tried it myself but i wouldn't recommend using it.
A-Gps is alot quicker and I've used it plenty of times. It's fast enough to update itself as you travel instantly

785730 2009-06-28 08:03:00 Thanks for that, I am looking at the E75. Not a huge fan of touch screens. A classic looking phone that has a slide out keypad is what I like - to write my emails and my travel diary and etc....

Trademe or go overseas to get it probably maybe in a few months or a year if I can hold it off and get it used.

Thanks.
