In another era, stars like Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Sid Vicious were felled by a combination of hard and soft drugs like heroin and alcohol . But in the new millennium, prescription drugs are looking just as popular, just as addictive — and just as lethal .

Take the case of Michael Jackson, who died Thursday at age 50 . The entertainer received daily doses of Oxycontin and Demerol, a law enforcement official told ABC News, and had been addicted to the drugs for two decades, according to one of his producers . Jackson died an hour after receiving a Demerol injection .

While deadly addiction to prescription painkillers and sleeping aids is not entirely a 21st-century trend, it is on the rise . According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, prescription-related deaths increased a whopping 114 percent between 2001 and 2005 .

That number does not include the high-profile death of The Dark Knight star Heath Ledger, who died last year after ingesting a deadly cocktail of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine .
