788521 2009-07-03 07:29:00 Can you please confirm to me if you can manually add in GPS coordinates even if you have not been to that place?

I have viewed the PDF manual but it says how to add points when you are there .

Thanks .

788522 2009-07-03 07:55:00 Don't have one but lots of friends do and they add grid refs all the time, I have the older black Garmin 12 and even that lets me put in grid refs in advance gary67 (56)
788523 2009-07-03 11:34:00 Yes, I had one, before upgrading. You can add a waypoint, then edit it to the coords you want. Or by using PC software and a serial cable. seltsam (13470)
788524 2009-07-03 21:16:00 Is that the eTrex? You can - press and hold Enter, scroll down to the co-ordinates and change them. pcuser42 (130)
788525 2009-07-03 23:02:00 Yes, the Etrex.
How many coordinates can I add in do you know? Is 50 too much?

Thanks guys. I am still deciding. I may want the newer yellow one with the sensitive receiver so it is either the basic ones or the map ones. Still undecided. With a electronic compass of course.

The eTrex H will store 500 waypoints. Don't get the older model - make sure it's an H so as to get the benefit of the high sensitivity antenna - it will get and maintain a satellite lock even in heavy bush. For an electonic compass you'll need to go ups a few models to the eTrex Summit HC or eTrex Vista HCx. Further up the model range it'll be a 76S (old, outdated) or the 60CSx or 76CSx.

That is very interesting, I have an older Etrex and it's pretty useless in the bush. It will pick up maybe one overhead satellite in moderate bush if daylight can be seen, but in bush travel I prefer to rely on map and compass and 'bushcraft'. Most times the Etrex gets left at home :)

Maybe with fading memory syndrome I should try out the H model

788530 2009-08-19 13:52:00 A watch can be used as a compass to find north assuming you have adjusted for daylight saving time. Better with an analogue watch rather than digital.

GPS units only tell you where you are and they have no idea in which direction to walk in the event you are lost.
