| 788608 | 2009-07-18 02:46:00 | A brief note on cost - the negative team points out a costing of $35m for the first 40 offenders, but what they are forgetting is that this includes setup costs for the entire program. It's like saying that living in a new house for a month will cost half a million dollars, just because the house took half a million dollars to build. Once the program has been established for a decent length of time and has started to make a real difference, that $35m startup cost will seem like a bargain. Our current systems are failing to adequately address rising youth crime. Boot camps will help by removing negative social influences and exposing offenders to an extensive array of positive influences that will improve their sense of self-responsibility and ability to integrate properly into general society, thus minimizing the likelihood that they will re-offend. The negative team has yet to come up with a substantive argument as to why boot camps will not work. They have repeatedly stated their preference for catching offenders early on before the offending takes place, but have taken a conveniently head-in-the-sand approach to the reality - these early measures cannot catch everyone, and we still need a solution to deal with those who slip through the cracks - there will always be at least a few. While we agree with the negative team that prevention is a good thing, prevention is unrelated to the real topic of this debate - namely, dealing with those who have already offended. Noting the negative team's continued dodging of the real topic under discussion, and the lack of any real opposing points, it seems clear that boot camps are a real and viable solution to a serious problem, and should be introduced at the earliest opportunity. |

| 788609 | 2009-07-18 02:54:00 | That concludes the inaugural PressF1 Great Debate. Thanks again to both teams for taking part. A poll should hopefully be created shortly for everyone to vote on. Which team do you think deserves to win, based on what they have said in this debate? Note: The debaters who took part in this debate cannot vote in the poll. |
