Like everything using a GPS is only part of the equation knowing how to put the grids onto the map and being able to read terrain is also a must especially in the dark or in wind, rain, whiteout conditions | gary67 (56) | ||

| 788536 | 2009-08-20 10:10:00 | The best price on the Etrex H is here, they matched the price offered by GunCity but delivery is free: www.downunderpilotshop.co.nz I've ordered one, we will see if it does actually work in thick bush cover or down deep canyons as the advertising claims. The nearest deep canyon I can think of at the moment is the Hutt River Gorge................ Edit: I can't go there at present with the dog as the area has had a 1080 drop, in fact my favourite area, Kaitoke Regional Park/Catchment area has been done over with 1080, and having lost 2 dogs to 1080 wont be going anywhere near. Edit, again: Just been re-reading Nomads posts. I'm not sure that a GPS with all bells and whistles like built in compass or altimeter is the best option. If the unit goes bung, or the batteries die, then you've lost everything. A basic Sylva compass is best for use with a map and map orienting, I've 2 electronic altimeters but I much prefer the mechanical Thommen, even though the resolution is not as good. Edit again: I can't see digital read out very well in the bush, or when the light is bad :) |

| 788537 | 2009-08-20 16:47:00 | I use an E-Trex H all the time for SAR work. I was blown away at the huge increase in sensitivity for the H from the old model. Very good, even under a wet canopy. The old one was useless. As long as you know how to use it, can obtain a grid reference, and have a recent topo map of the area, and a compass they are a great tool at that price. The waterproofness is a bonus, my current one has been tested to 1.5 metres when the kids chucked it in a stream.:annoyed: I've got plenty of mates with the Etrex mapping GPS's. Very convenient, but 3 times the cost. |

| 788538 | 2009-08-20 19:57:00 | The new Topo50 maps using the NZGD 2000 grid system will be available from 23 September. www.linz.govt.nz Was told last night by a very reliable source that on 22 Sept retailers will be having to send back any unsold old topo maps and be supplied with the new ones, this will not be a choice thing they have to do it. So if you want old topo maps go buy them soon, also not all GPS's will be able to be switched over mine can't be it's an old black Garmin 12 |

The Etrex H doesn't have NZGD 2000 as an pre-loaded option, but it can easily be entered as a User Grid. |
