874147 2010-04-08 02:13:00 A few days ago when starting up my PC began making some rather horrible noises which then settled down after about half an hour or so. I've tracked the racket down to the graphics card fan which I can see isn't running properly. It seems to sort of stop and start a bit and when I put my finger on it the noise stopped.

Is this something that I can fix with a drop of oil or a new fan or am I up for a new graphics card?

It's a Leadtek GEForce PX6600GT PCIe card.

874148 2010-04-08 02:24:00 Your card looks like this one?

Often a bit of WD-40 or similar helps them, but once fans start doing this it's only a matter of time until they give up all together and the graphics card cooks itself.

If you could find a faulty card on trademe you might be able to switch the heatsinks, but a working 6600 is under $50 off trademe now so it's hardly worth the effort. If you were looking at a new card this would be a good opportunity to upgrade. ;)

874149 2010-04-08 02:34:00 Yep, that's the one. Not really keen on replacing the card if I can just replace the fan. Hopefully it is just a matter of finding a fan that will fit. FoxyMX (5)
874150 2010-04-08 03:06:00 Just buy a new fan + some thermal paste.

Something like that is a 10-20 min job.

874151 2010-04-08 03:08:00 Velcro tape, and a spare 80mm fan is all you need. qazwsxokmijn (102)
874152 2010-04-08 04:53:00 OK, so I took the card down to the local PC shop to see if they had a fan that size and was told that I would have to replace the entire card as you can't get fans like that. :(

Are they telling porkies?

874153 2010-04-08 04:54:00 Nah you can't really source graphics card fans, pretty much every single one is different.

So either new card, or rangi something up like qaz suggested.

874155 2010-04-08 05:09:00 my mate bought a big passive cooler when his fan failed. Cools his gpu better than the fan did. nedkelly (9059)
874156 2010-04-08 08:31:00 Any of these would probably work:

pricespy.co.nz
pricespy.co.nz
pricespy.co.nz
pricespy.co.nz

(more: pricespy.co.nz)

Just make sure you look up the specification on the manufacturer's website and make sure it will fit and it has enough cooling.

Failing that, eBay is good, in fact you could probably buy an exact same fan from someone in China and just replace that, without having to buy a whole new heatsink.
