1451341 2018-07-09 00:56:00 Dont make them up for other people.
That would be a rather grey area of the law , and you'd be personally responsible for any issues/fire/zaps .

many people arnt as competent as they make think (you may be) , eg a guy asking in forums what that weird symbol is when wiring up stuff (it was the earth symbol)

1451343 2018-07-09 04:25:00 Ok so it is a long time since I was a hands on electrician so I am very rusty on regulations. The power supply to a Caravan (I would think that a motor home is the same) is 15 amp Reyrolle metal plug & socket. Cable size was 2.5 mm 3 core flex, no joints. All Proper Caravan Parks will not allow you to plug in unless you have a current licence or electrical WOF & Lead in good condition. To park the Van at the side of the house to use, then you will need the correct 15amp Reyrolle socket installed on its own 15 amp fused supply on the house. DONT make an adaptor to use in a domestic 10 amp power point, it was illegal & could void any insurance. I cannot remember the length of time the warrant was good for.

How would you feel if one of your children stepped out of the van onto the ground whilst holding onto it, & was electrocuted. PJ

Check with an Electrician who has a current "Licence to Work". To see if I am right. PJ

1451344 2018-07-09 05:17:00 afaik it legal to make your own extension lead.

not sure on current rules but the there was a rule that appliances must have the lead that came with them (something like that) so any that came into the shop with a double adapter plug fitted or a replacement plug, they would have to leave them off and home owner had to wire them back on themselves. not legal for tech to have it leave the shop with it on but legal for home owner to fit themselves. werid.

making a light in the end of an extension lead is ok. the one that was frowned on was a lead that fitted into the light (remove the bulb) so you could run tools etc. often they got misused and overloaded the circuits.

Thanks Neil. I don't remember plastic ones, but should be safer, Do caravans still have to be WOFed & who by. Used to be Power Board inspectors in Auckland, when they had them. PJ

1451347 2018-07-12 07:51:00 I used to make my cords up too but never now. Ready-made ones from Mitre10 and Bunnings are now cheaper than buying the parts.

+1 Poppa John.

I think the story is that a new wiring install of a bus/caravan relies on the COC for 2 years from the sparky who wired it.After that it needs an inspector to certify it.
PS.Still remember visiting you and your wife in Wanganui years ago.Trust you're not aching too much from all the shocks you've had!

1451349 2018-07-16 04:11:00 Am I legally allowed to make up my own extension cord? I've just been speaking to someone (non-sparky) who thinks it is not legal .

Not only can you make up your own extension cords, you can totally rewire your own house .
You can also rewire your neighbor's home if you do it for free .
You are your own boss and don't forget it!

You can also carry a handgun, shotgun, 50 caliber or 88mm in full view or concealed on your person . . . . . small-yield nuclear devices are OUT however for whatever asinine reason that may be!

Hrrrumph!

Oh . . . . . wait . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . that's HERE in Montana . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Never mind . :xmouth:

Just jerking the tail that wags .
