1448924 2018-04-27 10:19:00 I have tried to install a Samsung EVO860 without luck. My O/S is windows 10 pro. The Bios shows that the drives are IDE - not AHCI.

I have read the following and wonder if I should give it a go. triplescomputers.com

If I do this, do I need to change the Bios to AHCI?

I have already cloned my system from a mechanical drive to the SSD but it is not recognised by the PC when I boot.

Any help would be appreciated.

1448925 2018-04-27 10:38:00 Yes. The website says 3) Go into Bios. 4) Change it to AHCI.

You say you have cloned your HDD and it's not working. Without going any further this should be working. I had Windows 7 with a normal spinning HDD and it was IDE. I cloned it and my Samsung 850 SSD was IDE. That worked. But in my own case I did a fresh Windows install after setting the Bios to AHCI.

1448926 2018-04-27 19:50:00 Depends if your board supports AHCI

Ran into this when installing a Samsung EVO SSD with a Gigabyte LGA 775 Board, the only option was "enhanced"

Still quick but still would be quicker with a board with full support

1448927 2018-04-27 23:36:00 OK, hopefully I have now got it right. I have used EaseUS partition master to clone from my mechanical HDD to the Samsung. As I couldn't access the Samsung on the PC to start, I used a Welland Speed Master attached via USB3 and the copy went well. I detached the mechanical drive C: and changed the BIOS to accept the Samsung as the boot drive. Miracles of miracles it works fine (fingers crossed).

My only concern now is should I invoke AHCI? I still have my Storage mechanical HDD and I don't know how changing to AHCI will affect it or the present setup.

1448929 2018-04-27 23:59:00 So the Samsung now boots?

Samsung should had provided a software that allowed cloning / migration of data.
IDE is fine as it is. As Lawrence noted, it's still a lot faster.
If it is working now, and you have your old HDD as backup. You can switch this to AHCI - after all you have backups.

Edit - is this a laptop or a PC? Either way, if you have not, maybe you should put it as the main drive inside the machine ie running with SATA instead of USB3.

Actually they don't supply these days with the Drive, you have to read the small print in the tiny booklet they give you, which points you to www . samsung . com/samsungssd From there you have various options including downloading the software .

1448931 2018-04-28 02:07:00 First boot worked well. Had to go out and turned the PC off. Came back, turned it on and it's turned to custard. "Cant find the boot disk". I've reattached the old drive and disconnected the SSD. Leave as is until I can get my patience back. Bryan (147)
1448932 2018-04-28 03:11:00 Are you sure that you have set your bios up to find the SSD as the boot disk? Disconnect any other disks and try it with only your SSD connected and try again. CliveM (6007)
1448933 2018-04-28 03:30:00 Thank you CliveM. I've tried your suggestion. The PC doesn't even get to BIOS before the system tells me that it can't find the boot disk. Got me beat at present. Bryan (147)
