789785 2009-07-07 07:49:00 If you're not certain the generic part is good, why bet your car on it? R2x1 (4628)
789786 2009-07-07 08:26:00 Ask a good independent as they have to stand by the products they use mechanic what they use gary67 (56)
789787 2009-07-07 08:44:00 Surely that would depend on the value of the car.

How you maintain your $195k Lexus is somewhat different to a $2300 Corolla.

789788 2009-07-07 09:14:00 Saving money on oil and filters is seldom good economy. The inconvenience and expense of fitting a replacement motor is not as much fun as it might be, and even a cheap motor is dearer than a very big stack of filters.
There's nothing wrong with many generic parts, but if you are not certain of the brand you choose, well, it only takes one dud to ruin your day. If in doubt, go OEM.

789789 2009-07-07 23:07:00 Im not overly fussy about filters but I always go with the recommended oil. But I also change my oil and filter quite often hueybot3000 (3646)
789790 2009-07-07 23:12:00 Oil change every 5000km, rest of the filters every 10,000km.

I use the filters etc that Repco sell, normally Ryco or Repco branded I think, and Castrol Magnatec (sp?) oil. This is for a 4AGE though, if I had an Altezza or Lexus, it would be genuine Toyota or TRD bits and pieces.

789791 2009-07-08 07:56:00 Oil change every 5000km, rest of the filters every 10,000km.

What filters other than oil do you find necessary to change every 10,000km?

789792 2009-07-08 08:12:00 id say auto filter, maybe fuel filter? hueybot3000 (3646)
789793 2009-07-10 04:05:00 I can see that this isn't a question about Linux so I feel I can add from my area of expertise here for youse guys.

1) Dealers do NOT make oil filters.

B. Their car manufacturing companies do NOT either.

The OE filters that are being so boldly pimped here are not made by, designed by nor required by the manufacturer of the car in the first place.

They are made by independent companies, albeit with some prestigious names (Fram, AC, Purolator, Wix, etc.) and they are re-boxed or logo'd as OE and placed on the shelves of dealers for sales to people who are (the word doesn't fail me here, I just don't want to use it) "rectally-observant" fits OK though.

There may be some certain specifications for a new engine from the factory by the manufacturer of that engine; Ford was an example of that logic and they used a Motorcraft PH8A, when they could ONLY resell you a PH8 replacement since the "A" designation had a pellet inside the filter canister to combat alkali for the first break-in oil interval. Ford filters are made by Purolator anyway.

The logic ends there as from that point on the manufacturer is only interested in selling of seriously marked-up after-sales service items to people who insist on buying the OE/R parts - for a big profit.

If one uses good parts and does so regularly, then using a good named part (I suggest WIX as a superior part) and good oil (Castrol "Tection" is my suggestion for pre-1997 engines) with ZDDP in it - (unlike the new California State-mandated stuff that will kill a non-rollerized engine quickly) - then one has done as good if not better than using OE/R parts in the first place.

PS: Filters in vehicles can be as below:
Cabin filter
Oil Filter
Transmission filter
Fuel Filter
ECS filter
KV filter
Air filter
Power steering filter
