876042 2010-04-15 03:05:00 Do you think the time may have come where I give up and take it in to be fixed?

The fact is that most people would like to help but we can't see what you see as the Laptop is not in front of us.

876043 2010-04-15 03:19:00 Thanks Speedy. I have got it to boot using the Windows 7 installation disc. I have got to the option where I can use recovery tools to fix problems starting windows. I have tried that before and it didn't work. I chose Repair.... but I put the Vista disc in.It says to insert the installation media for the device and click OK to select the driver. No idea what driver its on about and I wouldn't know which disc has the drivers. I would have thought the first disc I put in would have it. ollieogg (6593)
876044 2010-04-15 03:31:00 I know that Sweep, and I do appreciate the help I get. Its just soo frustrating.:badpc: I havent had this much grief since windows 3.11:annoyed:

Can someone give me an idea of the costs to get it looked at? Just a ballpark figure?

876045 2010-04-15 03:35:00 Does the Windows 7 cd give you an option to install Windows 7 as well? Speedy Gonzales (78)
876046 2010-04-15 03:40:00 Sounds a little like you are going slightly off tangent.

Following the link Speedy originally gave This on here (www.sevenforums.com) - when you get to Number 7 Under the Drive options - open it, select the partition that has Vista, delete it - then carry on installing windows 7 from fresh.

BUT as per the previous post I made (72) , don't activate as it says (read the post) it as its an upgrade DVD.

The install will wipe the drive and all data will be gone.

Shouldn't take any longer than an hour - I'm just about to start one on a customers PC now, They had upgraded to W7 from Vista - total disaster. :groan:

Trying to go back to Vista without a full reinstall of Vista is a complete waste of time - it wont work.

876047 2010-04-15 03:44:00 Yup and when I choose it, it goes thru the usual first few screens and then says you started the installation from the disc please remove it and boot from windows to continue installation. ollieogg (6593)
876048 2010-04-15 05:08:00 Does it give you the option to cancel out of it ? IF not you may be stuck between it installing and not installing from fresh.

There is a way around this - BUT it does have a possible problem.

The PROBLEM may be that if the W7 DVD doesn't detect a blank HDD, you then will have to take it to someone who knows what they are doing, OR have the SATA drivers.

DO the following at your own risk as per above -- BLOW away the current damaged install, this will leave your drive completely blank.

Boot from the recovery CD you download OR W7 DVD - click on the repair computer, when the window opens, select command prompt.

(Commands in bold)
In the command prompt type in:

diskpart < press enter> at the diskpart prompt ( will take a second)

List Disk <Enter>

select disk 0 ( assuming your main drive is disk 0, if any other number select what ever number it is) <enter>.

clean <enter>

This will instantly WIPE the drive, now reboot from the W7 install DVD, and it should install, as long as it doesn't spit the dummy and cant find the sata drive as mentioned above.

As shown in this picture (www.imagef1.net.nz) the full commands above - If I had hit the enter key, I would have just wiped my drive in a split second.

876049 2010-04-15 05:15:00 I'm still confused. At this stage I don't even know what O/S wants to now install. Sweep (90)
876050 2010-04-15 05:18:00 From what I gather sweep -- vista Recovery DVD's dont load, and W7 saying its already part way though an install. :waughh:

So looks like its stuck between knackered old OS and new install. As I posted above (87) - I'd wipe the drive and start from fresh with W7.

876051 2010-04-15 05:26:00 Agreed. That was my guess but it was only a guess which may not be good enough for the OP. Sweep (90)
