Good to hear that the problem was solved though, and I agree that lack of power is probably the cause of the smoke problem, so check the ratings of the various components. Losses may be higher than predicted if the inverter output is a quasi-sinewave and you may have less than 18 volts RMS at the tracks on 'make smoke' load. Beg, steal, or borrow a true RMS multimeter and check the conversion voltages stage by stage. I guess I said "speculation" because of all the other random suggestions that had been made. :) The solution was a matter of finding and using what was available. I think the inverter output is supposed to be true sinewave - and I suspect we would have had other control problems if it wasn't. I agree though about low voltage probably causing the lack of smoke. Interestingly, it smokes fine going backwards, but going forwards, it puffs three or four times and then gives up. The other loco he bought at the same time smokes fine in both directions - but on a different track. I've got him doing various tests to remove variables to see if we can narrow down what is actually happening. I've also suggested to him measuring the voltage actually going to the track would be a good idea. I must say this has been an example of PressF1 at its best - an interesting discussion, lots of good suggestions and a minimum of idiot comment. I notice we somehow have veered on to lifts in the Sears Tower though :). |
