874987 2010-04-11 04:25:00 Time to get serious :stare: Well OK semi serious anyway. :p

As long as the hardware is OK this shouldn't have any bad effects, I do it sometimes and never had a problem.

Click start, type in Device - open device manager.

Click View / Show hidden devices, make sure theres nothing hiding in the DVD/CD drives.
What ever is there - right click and uninstall ( every thing in DVD/CD devices) - agree to any prompts. Close Device manager.

Turn Off PC. disconnect all optical drives. Turn on the PC, look to see if the drives have gone ( they should have). NOW go back into drive management and change the Letters for the HDD's. Reboot, make sure they have held.

Assuming alls well, turn off PC, connect 1 optical drive (the one that was giving problems), when the PC boots as soon as the desktop appears, you should see the drive reinstalling - if it doesn't then theres a problem. If it DOES, turn off PC, connect the other drive - turn on and same thing should happen.

874988 2010-04-11 04:28:00 Wainuitech: Please dont tell people to reset their BIOS or open their case if you dont understand their situation. Listen sunshine I do this for a living and have done for many years, I KNOW What I'm talking about.

Setting a BIOS back to default fixes many problems and wont cause any harm on a basic PC setup.

Second post and trying to boss people about.

874989 2010-04-11 04:32:00 Hi Com 64

That sounds plausible.

I am familiar with Task Manager etc under XP.

I have gone into it on my new machine.

What is the best way of printing out a list ?

There does not seem to be an option from the Menus.

Shall I just copy and paste the list into say Notepad ?

Please don't be too hard on Wainuitech !

The funny thing was my case was already open as I have not yet finished tidying up the cables in my new machine etc ! he he

874990 2010-04-11 04:49:00 OK Guys

Got It

The Virtual drive got me thinking.

I had a quick Google for Virtual CD's and went into the Wikipedia and they mentioned CD Cloning software, that got me thinking about Ultra ISO.

And I looked at my HI-Jack This list which is very short as I have not yet done much on this machine. I saw Litescribe several times, then I saw Ultra ISO, which I had installed, but do not use.

I uninstalled it and Voila my Virtual CD drive is gone and I was able to rename my F drive to D.

And now I have re-connected my DVD drive (and its now E as it should be) and it all looks great

874991 2010-04-11 05:06:00 Digby:-

Did I not mention cloning software like a virtual CD back in post #8?

I'm reasonably certain I did.

Pleased it's now sorted.

874992 2010-04-11 05:26:00 Good that its sorted,
As sweep mentioned - thats why I was looking at a possible hardware problem esp with the comment
But I am sure all I did was install Windows from my Windows 7 disk. That would indicate only the W7 Install - and W7 doesn't come with Ultra ISO. ;)

Enjoy W7 - you'll like it I'm sure. Dont spill any hot drinks on the New PC eh! :p

Yes you did Sweep !

But I did not make the connection just then.

So what colour Adkaf would you like ?

Check out our website and let me know what colour you want and your address.

You too Fred and Com64 and Wainuitech

You have all helped me so much.

And I must send one to Pctek, she often helps me. Speedy got one last year ! for his Hi-Jack This work.

You know what its like when you have a major project on and can't get ahead because of one small thing.....

874995 2010-04-11 07:05:00 Wainui - Didnt mean to offend :) I've also been a techie all my life and it was clear what the case was here. It's frustrating cleaning up problems caused by going off on completely unnecessary tangents like that... best of luck in the future :)

Digby - glad you got it sorted :)

874996 2010-04-11 07:17:00 Things are not always clear - classic example I have a persons PC who I supplied all the parts for, they wanted to build it themselves - no worries.

The person called me on Friday morning - he had installed W7 on the New Blank HDD as supplied.

This is what he told me:

After installing the OS - its showing 4 separate partitions on the drive - Not USB drives / Ports either.
Hasn't even got the Drivers installed yet -

I went around to have a look - From the Bootable Paragon Partiton manger CD - only shows the two drives W7 uses. He said he put in the CD, followed onscreen instructions - entered the Product key ended up with 4 drives showing in windows ??
