| 791366 | 2009-07-14 04:10:00 | The daily dose required for folic acid varies with age groups. Women who are planning for conception should definitely increase their intake in order to prevent their babies from developing spina bifida. As it is, I had not heard of folic acid supplement until this news hits me. Regarding folic acid intake and cancer, I haven't got the time to patiently analyse the results performed via Medline, but some preliminary findings suggest that there could be some genetic component to the correlation between these two variables. Cheers :) |

You will agree that in this case the Minister suggests she knows best. I see subsequent to her pontification last night,Key is saying it might not be set in stone, reason of course,a majority seem to be against it,these people make me sick how they want to be all things to all men, just to have a "rush"power wise. |

However, if something interferes and the tube fails to close properly, a neural tube defect will occur . Medications such as some anticonvulsants, diabetes, having a relative with spina bifida, obesity, and an increased body temperature from fever can increase the chances a woman will conceive a baby with a spina bifida . Women with epilepsy who have taken the drug valproic acid to control seizures may have an increased risk of having a baby with spina bifida . /B] However, most women who give birth to babies with spina bifida have none of these risk factors, and so in spite of much research, [B]it is still unknown what causes the majority of cases . The varying prevalence of spina bifida in different human populations and extensive evidence from mouse strains with spina bifida suggests a genetic basis for the condition . Studies show that a woman who has had one child with a neural tube defects such as spina bifida, have about a three percent risk of having another child with a neural tube defect . This risk can be reduced to about one percent if the woman takes high doses (4 mg/day) of folic acid before and during pregnancy . There is no single cause of spina bifida nor any known way to prevent it entirely . Neural tube defects can usually be detected during pregnancy by testing the mother's blood or a detailed fetal ultrasound . Sad but babies are born with various problems, should we medicate the entire world in case? It doesn't even eliminate the risk, just reduces it . I never took any nor was I told to when I was breeding . Give women who might be at risk some, leave the rest of us alone . |

Unknown and possibly dangerous? Chances are you've already eaten a good amount of folic acid today! :p Pregnant women do take folic acid tablets. I think. |

| 791371 | 2009-07-14 09:23:00 | This falls into the same category as panicking over SARS, Bird flu and pig flu . What category? That neither of them are worth the world's concern? However, if something interferes and the tube fails to close properly, a neural tube defect will occur . How is this relevant to folic acid? The varying prevalence of spina bifida in different human populations and extensive evidence from mouse strains with spina bifida suggests a genetic basis for the condition . Studies show that a woman who has had one child with a neural tube defects such as spina bifida, have about a three percent risk of having another child with a neural tube defect . I would suggest that you quote the sources in the future when you copy and paste chunks and chunks of paragraphs from an article . It's definitely unfair to the author(s) who have written the above . |

I have no doubt they cause cancer, becuase cancer rates have only risen since our food has become more and more processed . There is definately scientific evidence proving that particular food is the cuase of some cancers . . . . To be fair, over a similar period of time the number of people maimed and horribly crushed by oxcarts delivering non-chemical foods has fallen quite severely and continues at an all time low . Obviously, chemically enhanced foods do more than just make your kids easier to find in the dark . ;) |
