789947 2009-07-10 09:55:00 Twenty years ago when I challenged my daughters teacher at the lack of teaching of basic arithmetic, I was advised by this teacher that it was no longer necessary because it is the computer age.
"Oh", says I, "you teach binary",
"Wot is that" asks the teacher -
"Well you just told me it is the computer age - surely you know"

It was rather interesting that the deputy Headmaster at Howick Intermediate remarked to me, " That if a child is very weak in basic arithmetic, then the odds are they they came from Howick Primary and were taught in standard 2 by L. McD, the very teacher with whom I had the above conversation with.

The evidence seems to indicate that the mathematically challenged L. McD's attitude now pervades the NZ education system

789948 2009-07-10 10:29:00 I admit to having to use excel for a fair bit of maths. What really pisses me off though, are people who say add, when they mean multiply, or minus, when they mean percentage...

Yes, these are grown people. At least the kids, if you apply game terms, can tell you how many kills they need at 30 points a kill to get to level 76...

I too use a calculator or Excel at home.
But I do know some algebra and you really only need to know how to express the formula and what order to do it in.
