789926 2009-07-08 04:39:00 Its not even a hard one.

What is 5 as a percent of 1195?

ie there are 1195 known cases of swine flu and 5 have died - whats the % that are dying?

:thanks

789931 2009-07-08 06:05:00 I'm sorry but you couldn't do that calculation yourself but you still blame the NZ Education system? That's a tad hypocritical no? beeswax34 (63)
789932 2009-07-08 06:24:00 Hypocritical? No - honest.

Its a simple equation, I have 2 grandsons home, me and the Master, none of us could get it.

IMO the problem with us is we dont want to change anything, any changes we do allow cannot be BIG changes, so our education system wanders along barely keeping students attention.

What it is is a big pathetic fuss about nothing.
Or perhaps a crafty way of offloading Tamiflu stocks.

The other day they said around 400 people die here every year of plain old ordinary flu.

This one has to be the best flu out then.

I think they might end up with the "Cry wolf" syndrome. Keep on and then once there really is a plague to worry about everyone will be bored with the drama.

789935 2009-07-08 09:26:00 It's too early to say it is overblown.

Got to remember, that there's 4 dead BEFORE it is truely widespread in the community, and before the health system is overwhelmed.
These 4 died despite the best of care. How many will die when the care is not there?

With only 1000 known cases - wait till there's 100,000 cases all happening at once! It has the potential to balloon to that scale, and the health system will be practically unable to help in such a situation. Victims may die because the requied systems for intensive care are totally overwhelmed.

And Bird Flu remains just as much a threat as before. They could both hit back to back.
