789806 2009-07-07 09:56:00 I'd say around $1400 per sqm, slightly less if you do a large proportion yourself. nofam (9009)
789807 2009-07-07 10:20:00 Holy cupcakes. Not that much nofam. More like $1100. I've seen places advertise $850/sqm for a new house. pine-o-cleen (2955)

Well, I work in the building industry, and get everything for cost + GST and there's no way I could build a house for $850/sqm.

I've seen those rates too, and they're obviously just averaging that out for a full house lot of materials and labour.

A lot of materials, particularly mechanical fastenings, increased in price 30% - 50% in the last year as steel prices went up. I'd estimate a small extension would cost me around $1000/sqm, and that's doing everything from putting the gib up onwards.

Good point made by Gary though - I had a quote to fabricate and install 3 aluminium windows a few months back. They wanted around $2000 to install them, which I thought was extortionate. Asked around, and found a builder who would do it for $900!

Interesting topic!!

789812 2009-07-07 19:50:00 Yeah I'm on the sharp end although having swapped from full on building to joinery I don't have my finger on the pulse as to what is being charged these days. We don't have much work on and my boss is selling off a vehicle this week because of this and we are taking on other work not just joinery to try and keep all our staff gary67 (56)
