877317 2010-04-17 00:05:00 Hi

The previous thread seems to have gone cold so this is where I am at the moment.
Original post
"I've been away for a bit and upon fireing up the laptop was eventually greeted with the message "Webcam driver open fail. Please restart camera or compter." The Camera Assistant software appears to be loading OK but I cannot find the camera listed in Device manager. Also under Tools>Options>Video Skype says it can't find a webcam.

Does all this mean that the webcam hardware has failed completely? What are the options? If I need to download a driver where's the best place to get it (have tried the Toshiba website but don't seem to be looking in the right place so a link would be useful)?

According to the label on the bottom it's a Satellite A300 PSAGCA-02V010 (although I think it was originally advertised as an A300/V01). The webcam has been working fine since I bought it in Dec 2008

The OS is Vista Home Premium SP1

Hope that helps the suggestions.

Thanks "

I didn't get anywhere on Toshiba's US site so somehow landed up on the UK/Europe site. Coudn't find the exact model there so went for the A300 PSAGCE and downloded the driver for that. Uninstalled the existing Camera Assistant software, cleaned the registry and installed the downloaded stuff. Got the same message "Webcam driver open fail. Please restart camera or compter."

Gave up for a while and then got a message from the task bar stating "Device driver software was not successfully installed. Please consult with your device manager for assistance getting this device installed. Chicony USB 2.0 Camera. Device unplugged".

The next day I went to Toshiba's Aussie site and found my specific laptop model and downloaded the webcam software for that. Went thru' the same process with the same results.

So, my thinking is there's a hardware failure somewhere - any thoughts on that? If so what can be done about it?

Maybe I should just give up and get a USB webcam with my Flybuys points!

877318 2010-04-17 00:41:00 Well to make things easier, check for updates and see if a driver turns up there. If it does, install it. I would install SP2 as well. WHAT registry cleaner did you use?? Some can screw systems up. If you go to device manager, whats it say for the cam?? Double click on it, go to details, change it to hardware ID's, copy and paste what it says there here. 877319 2010-04-17 00:44:00 I knew there was one post I was looking at and forgot OOPS :o

I had a similar problem on a customers Toshiba laptop a while back - installed Yawcam (www.yawcam.com) software, and the Cam fired up nicely on it, had to install the latest java from memory - it did warn it wasn't installed - it ended up being a software Problem with the laptops Cam program.

Try that - at least it should tell you if its the hardware or software. You may have to have a look through the settings/options as some are turned off by default.

877320 2010-04-17 02:01:00 Hi Speedy

I uninstalled Camera Assistant with Revo uninstaller (has always worked well in the past) and cleaned the registry with Comodo System cleaner which, again, has never produced any problems. Windows updates are up to date although I haven't installed SP 2. Here's the thing - I can't find any reference to the camera in device manager - it's crtainly not under "Imaging Devices" which is where it should be shouldn't it?

Wain - have installed Yawcam and have played with the various settings from the icon in the task bar. If I exit it and fire it up again from the desktop icon I get the little splash screen which sometimes says "Loading Gui" and then appears to do nothing or sometimes stalls sayin "reading settings".

Thoughts?

877321 2010-04-17 02:03:00 Additional - the only way I can get rid of the spalsh screen when it stalls on "reading settings" is to restart the laptop tuiruru (12277)
877322 2010-04-17 02:20:00 Is there a button to turn the cam on or off?? Maybe its off? Speedy Gonzales (78)
877323 2010-04-17 02:30:00 Hi Speedy
According to the user guide: "The web camera software is pre-configured to start when you turn on Windows VistaTM; if you need to restart it go to Start → All Programs →Camera Assistant Software → Camera Assistant Software."
I've done that and nothing happens

877324 2010-04-17 03:10:00 Dont know then. I could check it out from here if you want with teamviewer.

But you'll have to download it then install/run it. Then send the ID and password to me in a PM. So, I can log in

877325 2010-04-17 05:18:00 Wain - have installed Yawcam and have played with the various settings from the icon in the task bar. If I exit it and fire it up again from the desktop icon I get the little splash screen which sometimes says "Loading Gui" and then appears to do nothing or sometimes stalls saying "reading settings". Have you got the latest Java installed on the Laptop, the software requires Java. I just loaded the program on a PC that has no Cam, it flashed past the part you mentioned, and the main control Window opened with in a second or two to This window (www.imagef1.net.nz). Looking under the setting button, it also says no device which is correct since theres no cam attached :)

I see on the How to Geek site you asked the same question - did you try what VistaMike suggested ??

If so and its still not working, then the Cam may be partly dead.

When you remove software and reboot, does it pop up with a message saying device found etc ?

877326 2010-04-17 06:23:00 Hi Wain

Had already done what Vistamike had suggested

When I removed and reinstalled the software it didn't say anything about the device being found - after a couple of restarts it told me the software had installed successfully

Uninstalled Yawcam with Revo. Downloaded and installed the latest version of Java and used their verification option on their webpage to test that it was installed correctly. Reinstalled Yawcam and started it up. It loaded the Gui and displayed "No device selected" in the top box as in your PNG image. When I go to Settings>Detect Webcam it suggests Ip camera but that doesn't lead anywhere. So I guess that means the camera is munted unless you've got any further suggestions.
