791753 2009-07-15 04:18:00 I know I can read it on Google etc, but here it's about 62.4ºC today - and hotter tomorrow and humidity in the single-digits.

Summer's coning. We expect the fires to be close behind.

791757 2009-07-15 04:51:00 Cool down by having a hot shower

It's a lot colder here. Recently one of NZ's airports (somewhere :p) had a maximum of -3.

791758 2009-07-15 05:19:00 I tried the F-to-C conversion site and guess I messed up a little.

It's 108º today and gonna be 113ºF/45.0ºC tomorrow.

42.22C is more like it - but it feels like 144ºF

That was not "just going for a reasonable hike", that was a damned hard slog they let themselves in for.
We don't know the details yet, and probably wont as the media seldom does go into details, but most likely a bad decision was made to carry on to Kime, when they should have turned back to Fields hut upon reaching Tabletop where they would have seen how deep the snow was going to be.

The bloke most likely under estimated the effort required to get through waist deep snow particularly for the stress on the woman.

Very sad indeed.

791761 2009-07-15 05:42:00 Do you have humid summers typically Joe?

Haven't spent any time on the West Coast, but have had a summer and a winter in New Hampshire, and found the seasons quite contrary; a very humid summer, and very dry winter, which is the opposite to the southern part of New Zealand!

It was 25 F the other morning when I left for work; that's quite cold for Dunedin. The airport was actually 19 F and was closed all morning due to ice on the runway.

Needless to say it's been a cruel winter thus far!!
