791487 2009-07-13 22:29:00 Feedback is being sought on which flag Maori would like to see flown on the Auckland Harbour Bridge on Waitangi Day.

Maori Affairs Minister Dr Pita Sharples is in Auckland today to launch a series of hui on the Maori flag issue.

Participants will be asked on which occasions they think it is appropriate for a Maori flag to be flown.

They will also have four choices - the flag of the independent tribes of New Zealand, the New Zealand flag, the New Zealand red ensign or the Tino Rangatiratanga flag.

The 21 hui will be held in different parts of the country, with the first in Kaitaia on Saturday.

Maori were angered when the authorities that run the Auckland Harbour Bridge refused a request to fly the Maori flag on Waitangi Day.

Prime Minister John Key said he would support a flag chosen by Maori flying from the bridge, Parliament and Premier House on Waitangi Day from next year.

That's great - they should have a say. It should be a day for all of us.

But..... hui? Why? Hours of meetings, when a simple poll on the ACC website would suffice?

Some people just like to drag things on......

791489 2009-07-14 03:59:00 Just how many ACC "pollsters" do you think own, let alone have access to, a PC?? :( :( Zippity (58)
791490 2009-07-14 04:29:00 It's only Auckland, so quite a few, I would think.
Maori doesn't automatically equal no computer. Or maybe they could do it with their Sky remotes....

Besides, it's not a life-threatening issue. It's just canvassing opinion.

*Edit I love your sig. Drives me up the wall, too.

791491 2009-07-14 06:08:00 IMO they shouldnt havent have their own flag shown ever.

New Zealand is not the way it is be because of maoris, they dont represent what NZ is...at all. The traditional side of the maori culture is not traditional, its a flashed up version of what were once war dances (which i actually think is cool). I think the all blacks doing the haka ect is a mockery of maori heritige as its all showboating.

If maoris had a seperate flag that would basically be them disassociating with NZ. NZ is what it is because of the brittish

Thats exactly why theyre doing it. The british may rule NZ (well they think they do). Doesnt mean it applies to everyone in NZ

791493 2009-07-14 06:29:00 If Maori get their own official flag, then why not have a white flag? If Maori can be 'proud' of their race, why is it that when European whites try to have pride in their race, they're called racist?

It's selective racial segregation, plain and simple. It can be summed up by: If a Maori does it, it's not racist!

But are the majority of European whites specifically from Europe? If so what flag would be representative, as I thought most white NZ's were of British descent. I think British origin is portrayed in the NZ flag - certainly not from any European country...

791495 2009-07-14 06:58:00 European/British... It's all the same to me. Isn't Britain part of the EU anyway? ubergeek85 (131)
791496 2009-07-14 07:32:00 Yes it is, I'm British and I think the union jack should be removed from the NZ flag. If you want to get pedantic why not the EU flag instead? gary67 (56)
