792022 2009-07-16 06:15:00 Not on the SAME sandwich I hope! Yuck!
NEVER in a sandwich? That would be in bad taste.

However, in a pie is a whole diferent kettle of fish, especially with a healthy dollop of tomato sauce (Like ketchup, built right-way-up. ;) )

The most contradictory country too. World renown for the religious cults, plus world infamous for its porn industry too.

The Constitution but look at how rascist it is.

Land of opportunity but loads are in poverty.

And so on.

But: anything good? Yeah - the computer industry, well at least the birth of it.
Steve Wozniack, Xerox PARC, Intel.

3 good things.
Contradictory - Yes, pctek, really on the button !
porn - yes, plus their television has gone from extremely pc to very much anything goes. A decade ago (I guess) they seemed quite puritanical compared with the Brits, however now, have you watched "Two and a half men" recently ...........I enjoy, but some of the comments, etc, really leave me blinking. Could be just the huge change.....still thinking about this one.
Maybe I am becoming more moralistic

Constitution racist - you are probably right as I know you don't make comments willy-nilly. You would very probably know the wording more than me -- so I would be keen to add to my understanding.

Loads in poverty - you are so absolutely right and this is where I have huge, huge difficulty. Though in the good old USA, even the poor seem to think that this is right. Is it massive brainwashing or is my thinking faulty ? Even at my advanced age I wonder of these things and am open to ideas !

The American Dream -- I am very, very sceptical !!!!!!!!!!!!

They have always talked like that :)

We used to get Canadian papers sent to us in the 40s when my uncle was stationed there with the RAF. They used to have monster comic sections, about an inch thick, with characters like Lil' Abner (probably the inspiration for the Beverley Hilly Billies), and Superman, these were actually syndicated American comic strips.
Then there was the GI invasion, and us kids (and the girls) began to learn to speak American.............we had to because the GIs couldn't understand plain Brum English.

792026 2009-07-16 10:15:00 New Zealand - beware of the cults.

That's what I was told when I came here in 1973, another lifetime, so it seems now, it should be:

"Beware of the fads"

Amendment 14 - Citizenship Rights. Ratified 7/9/1868. Note History
I also like:
Amendment 8 - Cruel and Unusual Punishment. Ratified 12/15/1791.

And then they come up with electric chairs.
Hmmm.

Good point pctek.

IMO it has everything to do with Ideals vs Reality.

The USA certainly has very high legal ideals, viz. the constitution, judicial system, international treaties, etc..
These put forth the highest forms of fairness and equality.

Democracy however adds the element of political reality, i.e. the need to collect votes to get elected and maintain one's position. American voters include a large number of those who decide on emotion, not reason. Any investigation into the Death Penalty will show that it is not only 'cruel and unusual punishment' but also unfairly / inaccurately applied and creates more problems than solutions - but this matters not because when American wingnuts are ticked off and angry, their emotions push aside all reason and the associated ideals. Politicians know this, and they also let their emotions overrule reason, and the legal ideals get degraded.
