791957 2009-07-16 13:41:00 And who can forget Harry Harrison and The Stainless Steel Rat - who must be mentioned in any discussion about space opera. Deane F (8204)
791958 2009-07-16 21:11:00 What the hell is the point of taking the worlds most boring stories and setting them in space?,

Well in the endless debates on what is real SF, one author said if you take the SF out of the story and there is no story then it is SF.

As opposed to Cowboys in Space or other lame crap. For the confused: Star Wars is not real SF.

791959 2009-07-16 22:13:00 In any story there are only 17 basic plots, or something like that, anyway - asking the "point" of setting it in space is as useful as asking why it was set anywhere.

I want the science fiction I read to entertain me and make me think - if it manages to do both of those things that then I really don't care if it's hard science fiction or space opera.

The main reason though, why I have read no fiction other than science fiction for the last 20 years, is because no other type of fiction has amazed me with the breadth of imagination of some writers. No setting in non-sci fi has ever approached the sort of thing David Zindell envisions in the Neverness books, or Iain M Banks, or countless others. Good sci fi leaves me with a feeling of wonder as well as entertaining me and making me think. I suppose that pleases the child in me and I'm happy with that - after all, I think that most people who fart around with computers were captured by the devices for much the same reason...

Your right, It should never have been written at all.

I personally don't buy into the debate about real SF, Hard SF, or any of the other ways people can categorise something in order to argue over which is better.

i read em all, Trashy SF through to ridicules convoluted hard SF through to fantasy....though I draw the line at mixing magic and unicorns with space travel.

Even read a few Start Wars novels and they were freakin excellent.

Read a heap of books in the Stainless Steel rat series, Never would have considered them Space Opera. And it must be said Harry Harrison is a rare Genius, I recommed his Eden series (I have just re-read it for the third time) and his novels set in an alternate middle ages, think its called the Hammer and the Cross series.

791961 2009-07-16 23:42:00 I've read some China Mieville lately - "Perdido Street Station" and "The Scar". I'm damned if I know how to classify them - Sci fi? Fantasy? The China Mieville Genre? Weirder than weird. Weird-on-drugs maybe? Deane F (8204)

I read those as well, And I have another, its about a train.

The writing blew me away though I thought the story failed on both The Scar and the train one.

Edit

The book about the train is called The Iron Council.

Recently I have also read a bunch of Joe Haldman books including The Forever war and the Worlds series, Also the series that starts with To their scattered bodies go, a dozen or so books set in the middle ages by Bernard Cornwell, and some throwaway vampire fluff thats been made into a TV series.
