791763 2009-07-15 06:40:00 I live in the high semi-arid desert area between Palm Springs and Riverside. Both are noted for big temps and low humidity.

The beach areas are more damp and they get morning onshore clouds in the form of a marine inversion (fog-ish).

We are about 1¾ hours away at 60+ MPH from the beaches and that's over some short foothills that keep the heat here in a form of nature's toilet bowl.

791764 2009-07-15 06:48:00 Joe, you Californians are going to have real problems if Schwarzenegger can't come up with a balanced budget. Wasn't financial stability the plank on which he was elected? The previous Governor Brown (was it?) maybe wasn't too bad after all. How can a US State go bankrupt, or does Washington bail them out as they did GM. Interesting times. Richard (739)
791765 2009-07-15 08:03:00 Rained this morning for a while then glorious sunshine until about 3.30 when the clouds came back but no frosts gary67 (56)

Good question .

California isn't the only state in dire straits . The wolf isn't just in sight now, he's at the door .

There are quite a few states that also are quietly folding their tents and pulling in the ropes to try to keep the politicians employed at the fiscal peril of the trench-dwellers . . . at least until they can make an escape on the last lifeboats to sunnier climes .

There are new taxes, masquerading as "fees" that don't sound the same euphemistically, but are the same . Sales taxes jumped a full 2- 3% in the recent months, schools have canceled their Summer scholastic make-up sessions ("Summer School"), courts and civil services are shut every Wednesday, libraries are closed 4 days at a time, open only three days and closing by 4PM .

Bars (pubs/NZ) and donut shops however, are making pall-mall cash .

State employees are given non-paid "holidays" (we call them "furloughs") to try to nibble down the deficit . The truth be told, if ALL the state's employees (250,000+) were fired, the debt would only move about one decimal point in the correct direction .

What's being done on the surface is all smoke and mirrors and a "don't pay attention to the man behind the curtains" mentality prevails .

Overspending and taxation on future income has become the bitter pill and now the reality sets in: California is busted . Everybody here knows it, but the glassy-eyed survivalist mentality is running amok and I bet to see armed gangs roaming the streets soon looking for food and iPods .

Sadly - this is just a harbinger of things to come, I believe . The state has issued script (Arni-bucks) that the banks refuse to negotiate any more, leaving the holders in a new limbo of sorts . They have "script" that is of zero value right now and no possible way to spend it except on State-Of-California debts and taxes fees and payments . Kinda sux to have money you can ONLY spend in repaying the gummermint money that they extracted from you in the first place - at NO interest either!

The blatant lies and corruption and promises of politicians are beginning to sound like a broken record (OK, a skipping MP3) and people are just beginning to see the feet of clay (and amalgamated iron shards) of their political demi-gods and so-called fearless leaders in industry, the arts and law enforcement, not to mention their more cerebral and almighty religious shamans .

Vehicle registrations "fees" (not "taxes"!) have been doubled and now Arnie wants to extract a new "fee" for any auto repair . He wants $40 . 00 for each work order generated in any shop for any auto repair . Nutz? Yup!

My wife's 2000 Chevrolet Astro Van registration fee has gone from $212 . 00 a year to $424 . 00 a year .

Taxes have been re-levied on foodstuffs where they were declared discriminatory and harsh to low/no income persons . Taxing foods was just mean and it was eliminated many years ago . Arnie has re-issued "fees" on foods and necessities to help corral the out-of-control and runaway cost of operating the Land o'Promise .

Governor Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Jerry_Brown" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org) wasn't so much a governor, but a paid-in-place paramour and bedmate to Linda Ronstadt and other Twinkie-Defense ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Twinkie_Defense" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org) individuals . His simony and piety were all self-aggrandizing and never had anything or anyone else in mind but hisself .

The next rumor?!? The State (like Connecticut has already done so . . . . ) will levy seizures on the "tax-exempt" 501(c)3 industries: the churches for the vast sums of monies, real estate holdings and corporations and grand objects d'art they possess . Just you watchum and see'um!

All the Federal shank of the US gvt can do is wring it's hands and extol the sadness and remorse that they feign and bewail yet will not be able to do anything about the Great California Demise . They can only print so much paper, script or not .

The elected rats are running all over the flooding decks and if they don't already have a casa in Côte d'azur, they are making real-estate deals as this is written .

OH! A NEW "FEE" has arisen!

The IRS has set into law a charge for "future earnings" on life insurance policies . This means that anyone who might conceivably receive in the future - any money from the insurance pay-out for a deceased person with their name on an inheritance or estate, has to make pre-tax payments NOW . Fines of 50-75% of the total amount inherited or paid out will be rigorously enforced .

So-o-o-o if you are a kid with a grandparent who MIGHT have included you in his will or on the insurance police as a beneficiary, then you gotta make tax payments now or pay a fine later on .

ANY Social Security retirement and/or disability payments are to be taxed now pre-preemptively since the gvt has not found a way to collect after you die . But they are working on it, you betchum!

As I recall Joe, you're right in the worst spot for smog, and the only respite you get from that is when the Santa Ana comes in and bulldozes it (the smog) out to the coast . The wind / temperature change is spectacular with pristine clear air behind the front of the Santa Ana . At least you get to give your lungs a rest from filtering out all the crap .

Surely with the weather and the recent IRS antics you tell us about later, you should have left already?

Hemet, really is a toilet bowl and the smog sits here like mercury in a wash tub . Winds less than 100MPH won't budge it and I just goto Idyllwild for a few days a week or to Big Bear City (6,500 feet) and even though there is LESS oxygen there, it is cleaner and I can really enjoy it .

The Santanas (locally-correct spelling) can only muster about 45-50 MPH but are really spectacular and I do enjoy them - but right behind them - and sometimes concurrently with them - the pyromaniacs find it an opportune time to practice their hobby .

Youse guys get the Southern Lights (You DO have a Southern version of the Aurora Borealis- - well, don't you?) and we get the glow of the immolating trees and bunnies in the hills .

About the IRS: They are a federal bunch and unless the next state in which I reside has actually seceded from the Grand Union, they are empowered there too - to extract and punish those who try to escape their wrath .
